A basic question regarding viruses

I have Nortons and it has told me that an email message has been sent to me with one of the Klez viruses. It has been quarantined, but my question is this. Is the only way you actually be infected with a virus is if you download the attachment? Or can they be in a normal email without an attatchment.

Not exactly true. There are new virus' that can infect you simply by looking at the emails. Not sure what they were but it was reported on techtv.

Can Jpegs have viruses? I tried to send some jpegs to a friend thru hotmail and macfee said it contained a virus, but I was sure that it didn't and tried again and this time the scanner didn't see any. Hmm.

Unless picture files have false double extensions and hide themselves like pornpicture.jpg.exe, they are impossible to infect.
