Problem connecting network

Hey guys. I just bought a new dell and want to transfer all my music and video files over from my old computer to my new one. It is several gigs of stuff so I thought hooking the two computers together via their network cards would be the fastest way, but it won't work. Both computers have network cards, and since they are in the same room, a network cable is connecting them. My old computer has Win 98 and the new one Win XP PRO. My new computer (host) keeps saying that the cable isn't connected, while my old comp looks like its ready to connect to anything. DO I need a router or hub? Wassup with this? Help would be greatly appreciated.

You need a crossover cable. Not a regular network cable.
