Best resolution for Digiatal pics for a website?

Whats the best resolution to use for digital pics on the web? I tried to open my page on dial up and it was damn_slow. The pics were high res I beleive 1280. 640 seems not enough detail, will 1024 be OK or should I just use the 'make small picture' fucntion and use the small pic on the main page with it linked to the full res pics?

It's not the resolution, it's the file size that's slowing things down for you.
You can still shoot pics in your camera's highest res, you just have to drop down the size.
For ordinary emailing and posting etc., a file size of 100KB or under should be fine for your dial up.

Do you have any imaging re-sizing software such as PhotoShop?

Some software that will allow you to re-size should have come with your camera.

Yeh, resize the pics and the resolution will be fine. Or as you said in your original post, you can make a thumbnail and link it to the original sized pic.

In addition to or instead of resizing you might try using a higher compression, which would also give you a smaller file.
