Difference between Hi8 and Digital 8 video formats ???

Can someone tell me, or point me in the direction of, what the difference between these formats is ??

hi8 = analog
digital8 = digital
MiniDV = Digital

Dr. Dean hit the high points. If the choice comes between Digital 8 and MiniDV, my preference would be for MiniDV because the cameras have wider manufacturer support. The main reason for buying Digital 8 would be if you already have an 8 mm or Hi-8 camcorder and still need something to play your existing tapes on.
