Domain Name Registration Question - Own or Rent???

I've heard that some of the discount places don't actually let you own it, but they rent it out to you when you register a domain name through them...so in the end, when you want to transfer your domain to another host, you have to pay a hefty fee. Is this true????

Is Namecheap.com and Cyberwings.com like this????

It is true. Tread carefully.

I like godaddy.com for simple service at a reasonable price.

Moving to computer stuff forum.

Randy's right. godaddy.com is the cheapest there is, and you have full ownership and control over your domain name.

So if you own your domain name, why is it that you must pay for it yearly? Is there any way to just pay for it and forget it? I guess I dont really understand how these things work

thanks guys

You can prepay several years in advance. I'm sure there's a good reason but i'm too lazy to think of one or to find the answer.
