Quicktime hijacked my .exe downloads

When downloading .exe files from websites Internet Explorer seems to call QuickTime for some strange reason to perform the download. When I click DOWNLOAD NOW, the QuickTime logo appears in the middle of the screen ...and then the "broken" QuickTime logo appears as if the download had failed. Things I've tried: 1.) Uninstalled Quicktime from control panel 2.) Deleted all the QuickTime file type associations in Windows Explorer. Can anyone suggest how to get normal downloading restored? Thanks. I'm not sure if this is in the registry, but it's driving me crazy.

(I have Windows 98 2nd Ed.)

Okay, found the solution on Microsoft's website. Had to delete a certain registry key.

Cool beans.
