Windows XP taskbar question

Well... I just got a new laptop as a gift and it has Win XP on it... which I really don't like at this moment.

Anyway, I'd like to put some buttons down in the taskbar so that I only have to click once to open up some frequently used applications. I used to use Win 2000, and all I had to do was drag the application from the start menu down to the taskbar and it would create the shortcut down there for me. I just tried this in WinXP and it doesn't work. Is there another way to do this?

first, right click on taskbar --> toolbars --> quick launch

now, you can drag shortcuts to the quick launch like in Windows 2000
