What does a dead laptop screen look like?

my laptop is 4 years old, so maybe its time just arrived--but i want to make sure before holding a funeral.

i had the laptop running all morning with no problem. i left for about half an hour to run a few errands but left the laptop powered up. when i came back, the screen was very VERY dark. it is no longer back-lit at all, but i can make out a little bit of the screen in bright light (which is usually when you can't see the screen very well at all).

this is a 14" TFT display on a gateway p2 laptop, if that helps anyone. i've rebooted and it still seems dead. any ideas?

Send it in to get repaired. It's dead.

If it is dead it would be better to get a new laptop rather than repair it.

Yep - dead displays are very expensive to replace.

yeah, i knew i wouldn't be mailing it in to gateway. i'll likely see if i can live without a laptop and then keep an eye out for great laptop deals.

it's amazing how useful a p2-233 still was. i figured it would've been completely obsolete long ago but it was still going strong. (at least for word-processing, web browsing, email, etc)

i'll leave it off and then check it out periodically in case it magically comes back to life, but i'm not holding my breath. i'm really thankful that i wasn't in the middle of anything really important and that i will still be able to get my data off the hard drive through the network.

Can you hook an external monitor to it?

i could use an external monitor, but the main reason i used the laptop was the portability on the wireless network we had set up. i also don't have an extra monitor, and likely wouldn't buy a new monitor for it. we'll just save some $$ and look toward a new laptop sometime in the future.

Sounds like the backlight went out, not the actual display itself. Call gateway and tell them this. Backlights shouldn't fail, and even though it is out of warranty, they might still fix it for free. This happened to my moms laptop, and they fixed it no charge, even though the warranty was gone.

Thanks Dave. i wasn't even going to call gateway because i figured it would be too expensive. they couldn't tell me how much it would cost (if anything), but i'm sending it in and they'll give me an estimate. i'm unclear right now who will be paying the shipping (likely me) or how much it will be--but it's probably worth shipping to see if they can fix it.

Dave99 is now my hero!!

if he hadn't posted, i wouldn't have even bothered calling gateway. but now have my laptop back, as good as new, and gateway didn't charge me a dime, not even for shipping. i was ready to just write the computer off, but now it's as good as new! that's the kind of customer service that will almost guarantee that my next laptop will be from gateway. i have three friends with dell laptops and the screens have been dying within a year. (i know many people with dell laptops, but they seem to have uncommonly frequent screen problems). even though they are under warranty, dell has still been giving them a hard time about getting them fixed, so i was really surprised when gateway took care of this, no questions asked.

Glad it worked out, especially for free.
