RAM question

I currently have 128MB 100Mhz 64Bit 4-clock CL=2 SDRAM UNBUFFERED DIMM in my computer (yes I know, a little outdated )

Will I have to remove this stick to install a 256MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM? Also, will the PC133 RAM even work in my computer?

i believe you do not have to take out ur existing stick of ram, unless you do not have any other available slots. the pc 133 will work, however it will not be running at pc 133, it should be running at pc100.

And that's due to the mobo, correct?

It's because of your other DIMM that's PC100. Your RAM will run on the slowest RAM speed.

Ah, so if I just take out my old PC100 RAM and put in the PC133 RAM, it will work at the PC133 speed? (I figure it's so cheap now, the little boost in speed might be useful, until I can convince the wife I need to build another computer )

unless overclocked, your memory is only going to run at the bus speed of the computer anyways

most likely, your computer either runs at 66 or 100..
what type of chip do you have?

and your memory will run at the same speed

Tabor 3 BX mobo
PIII 500 MHz

Also, my HD plugs into a card, and then into the mobo. Could I upgrade the card to an ATA 100 or 133 card and then get a 120GB HD with ATA 100 and run at that speed, or would that also affect the speed the data is transferred at?

actually not true. Ram runs at the FSB of the computer so if you have it set at 100 FSB which is what the BX chipset runs the P3 at then you are correct. however this ram might work at 133 FSB which would mean that the PC100 ram would be overclocked and not running at the manufacturers specs.

My PC2100 ram is rated for cas 2.5 but I run it at cas 2 I am also overclocking it a small amount to 139 FSB from 133 FSB ratings from crucial. this is nothing since many push ram to 150+ FSB for 133 FSB rated ram.

with proper cooling this is often possible to do.

By the way Lampei.

do not waste the money on the new card for ata 100 or ata 133.

Feel free to buy a faster hard drive but when you upgrade make sure the new computer has built in support for ata100 or ata133.

also leave the old memory in and just add the new memory. There is no reason to pull the old memory.

He may want to find out what the max RAM is for the motherboard before he does that though.

If the mobo will only recognize 256MB then the extra RAM won't help.

You covered everything else and that is all I could add
