Windows Media Player won't play MPG files anymore

I think it might have something to do with the fact I just updated DirectX to 8.1. Plays .AVI files just fine, just not mpg-1 files anymore.

How can I fix this, preforably without updating to a newer version of Windows Media Player. I'm sure it's something stupid.

If it helps, I'm running Windows 98SE.

Are you getting an error or is another player opening mpegs?

I'm getting an error. It's like it can't find the codec anymore.

I'm usually not online at home but will try to post an error message tommorrow. The MPG files work just fine on my VCD's so I know they are good, I just don't like not being able to check them first.

this same thing happens to me sometimes. I dont know what causes it but its like it forgets how to play mpegs. And when you look under file type options, mpeg is blacked out. Then usually with a few restarts it will play them. I also install some other video file player when WMP doesnt want to work. sasami2k is good.

I looked into this again last night. I'm not getting a codec error, I'm getting a DLL error. Sound Forge wouldn't work either so I removed it and reinstalled it and now it works fine. Microsoft said to run dxdiag so I did and verified that the install worked fine. Any more ideas?

have you recently installed real audio (or updated it) or any other competing video players?

You sure the file is mpeg-1 and not mpeg-2? My version plays mpeg-1 fine but never plays mpeg-2. To play mpeg-2 or svcd I have to use Power DVD in file player mode. Just looking at the executable you can't tell the files apart.

I'm absolutely sure! I encoded the files myself with TMPEGnc. Anyway, I've found a copy of Windows Media Player 6.4 and am going to install that tonight and my guess is that fixes the problem and I can tell the Microsoft DirectX8.1 people to fix their crap. I don't want Windows Media Player 7.1, the reviews aren't too good (don't wan't all the overhead, etc.)

I had this problem. I reinstalled Media Player with the "Overwrite All Files" option and it fixed it.

I reinstalled Windows Media Player last night and it installed a new version in another directory and it also has the same problem so it's not the program. Probably some shared DLL I think.

I loaded up a third party MPEG viewer and now I can watch MPEG's now (using any program). But it has this stupid watermark in the upper right corner and it studders sometimes. I think I was missing the Miscosoft MPEG filters/codecs but I can't see how I could download them from anyplace and don't want to reload Windows just for this.

I finally fixed this problem. I copied the mpg*.* files from another Windows 98SE computer in the Winsows/system directory and overwrote mine. Now it works just fine.
