Windows XP Media Player

I cannot watch my divx or avi...(the downloaded ones) movies with Windows Media Player in fullscreen OR in a skinned window...it freezes the picture...but if I play it in the normal mode, the files play fine...anybody else have that problem? I could watch the same files anyway I wanted when I had WinME on the same computer.

Did you try running those same files on Windows Media Player 6.0?

There are 2 versions of Media Player installed by default with WinXP. There's mplayer2.exe and wmplayer.exe. Do a search for them on your hard drive.

mplayer2.exe is Media Player 6.4 (on my comp at least) and wmplayer is Media Player 8. What I did was make all MPG, MPEG, and AVI files open with mplayer2.exe and others like WMV open with wmplayer.exe.

wmplayer.exe is just a memory hog for me, I have a slow computer and I find the older mplayer2.exe to be more to my tastes. If I want visualisations when listening to MP3's I just use Winamp. Never really liked Media Player 7/8 anyway.

You can run mplayer 6.0 by typing in mplayer2 in the run command box.

Try updating your video card drivers. Or even using an older version. I know that even the new Nvidia drivers are sometimes worse than the old ones. Especially with video playback. That's the same for 2 cards I've been using.
