File Menu missing?

I have a co-worker that somehow lost the File menu in Window Explorer, Internet explorer, calculator etc. (it works for other applications like Excel, Word, etc) (so all that is showing is Edit View Favorites Tools Help, for Internet explorer)

Does anyone have any idea of how to get this back? I have tried to customize the menus, but it does not allow that one to be customized. We use WindowsNT 4.0.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Take a look at the following registry key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

See if there is a value called "NoFileMenu". If so, back up the key, then either delete the string or change it to value 0.

I just tried what you said and they locked out ability to make changes to the registry (unless I am doing something wrong), thanks though!

If you don't have local admin rights you'll need to contact someone who can login that does.

And if you're locked out of your registry it is entirely likely you system admin disabled the file menus through a policy.
