Why is my computer running like crap?

When I open up explorer, my ram useage jumps up to 510megs, and then just hangs there for awhile. If I try to do more than one task at a time it starts to bog down also.

It ran fine till yesterday, and I have not installed anything new on it.

I am running WinXP, with a 1.4 Ghz AMD chip, 512 megs of ram. Anyone have any ideas as to why my pc started to think that it was a pentium 50 for some reason? Argh! the slowness is killing me.

Open Task Manager and goto the Process tab... find out which file is hugging all the memory.

Explorer.exe is using between 410 and 380. It just sits there between those two numbers it seems... The next highest is my ATI program for my video card, and that is only using 6mb's

For some reason I think that that is a bit much for that program to be using.

explorer definitely shouldnt be using that much memory. Reboot and imediately check how much memory explorer is using. Also look in the startup folder for programs that maybe starting up that you dont know about.

Also another thing you can do is go to www.xteq.com and download their windows tweak program(it's the best one out there).

One of the tweaks will pull the multi processes out of explorer and run them as seperate processes (because explorer is also used as the file manager in windows) this may help you determine what is hogging that memory.

Ok, I ran the tweek program and it seems to be running better now. Corse I have no idea as to what is running where now, but that does not matter to me as long as I do not have to deal with a slow pc.

Thanks!
