looking for the name of an old game..

I used to have this game about 8 years ago for my macintosh where you have 2 tanks and each player has to move the velocity and angle of the turrett and fire to try and hit the othe rpersons tank. I can't remember the name.

Anyone know of this game on the PC? Maybe a newer version or something?

I'm sure I have this around for the PC. Was it called gunner or something like that? I'll take a look.

I know mine wasn't called that. For one thing it had to be 8 characters or less.

Didn't this come with DOS? I have old DOS disks (2.0 or earlier) I can look through.

Are you sure it's not Scorched Earth? That's the one where it's turn based and you fire different weapons at each other. I think you purchased better weapons and shields before each round and then had to blow up the other tank using napalm or super napalm.

Ya that sounds familiar. It had really ghetto like NES graphics and you could get new weapons from points earned from damaging your opponent. I don't know if it was a DOS game because I was running MacOS then. I really wanna play it! hehe

The one I'm thinking of merely had two tanks on various terrain, with turret angle and charge strength choices. You kept firing until you blasted your opponent. Very crude, very mathematical.

The game I had was called Tank Wars. it was a 2d game, very cartoony. I had this back on my old 286. I recently tried running it on my Athalon 750 and I couldn't play it. It was moving WAYYYYY to fast

I found one similar on Download.com just now called Pocket tanks. It is very similar and has a lot of weapons (60 when registered) but it just doesn't have that ghetto 33mhz processor feel hehe.

Pretty much the same game as the one I'm thinking of.

Scorched Earth is by far the best game in this "genre." The best known/selling however is Worms.

Well sure, the executable name had to be 8 characters or less. I believe this one is about 11 years old. Here's a page with screenshots from a Linux port(closest thing resembling what I remember that I could find):

Yes. They're good also. But sometimes I got an error when starting the program. So I stuck with the Gorrilas. It was a lot of fun.

You can get Tankwar and Gorilla (and others) here:

http://www.qbasic.com/c7.shtml

I just tried out Tankwar on Win2K and it ran. Of course you'll need a copy of Qbasic.
