networking question

ok, so i have a regular desktop that runs XP, and is connected to the ethernet at my school. i have two ethernet cards connected to my desktop right now. i also have a laptop(win 98 se), and a crossover cable. is there anyway i could have internet access on both my desktop and laptop, without buying a hub?

If you already have them connected with the crossover cable, all you should need to do is turn on internet connection sharing in the windows XP machine.

that's what i thought...i have the internet working on my desktop, but it won't work on my laptop. the laptop does have internet access, but only if i do a direct connection, which i can't always do
