how do I rename a file extension on Windows 2000?

I'm trying to open an unfinished DAT file downloaded on Kazaa. I ried to change the extension to AVI so I can open it, but it won't allow me to change it. Any clues?

Make sure you've deselected 'Hide File Extensions for Known File Types' - to do this, go to any folder in Windows Explorer, then go to Tools>Folder Options, click the View tab, and then look for 'Hide File Extensions For Known File Types', and if it's checked, uncheck it.

Now all of your files will show the file extension, and you should be able to change any file to any extension.

You should be able to either right-click and do a rename in explorer or go into dos where that file is and do a move command like file1.dat to file1.avi. The file might be in use which would preventing from renaming it.
