Monitor and Video card question

I just replaced my old 8mb nvidia video card with a new 32mb Ati Radeon card. I increased the resolution on my monitor from 800x600 with the old card to 1024x768 and i changed the colors from 16 bit to 32 bit . When i press the menu button on my Sony G220 monitor it shows the refresh rate at 81.8khz / 101hz . One of my friends at work said that those settings were two high and would eventually ruin my monitor. Is my friend at work right? And if he is right how do i lower the numbers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I looked up the manual on the Sony website, and the specs you provided should be fine.

From the manual:
Recommended Resulution is 1024*768, Max is 1600*1200
Horizontal frequency from 30 to 85 kHz
Vertical frequency from 48 to 170 Hz
Anything in that range should be fine. Your monitor is new enough that if you set the video card to something that might damage the monitor, the monitor would display "Out of Scan Range" on the screen.

Thanks for the quick response. I had a feeling my friend did not know what he was talking about. Just wanted to be sure before i wrecked a 3 month old monitor.

I want to ask another question if it's alright. I've upgraded my monitor, memory, and video card in the last 3-4 months and i was wondering if i should upgrade my Dvd drive. I'm still using the the dvd drive that came with my Compaq Presario. I'm not sure what kind it is but i know that it is an 8x speed drive. What kind of benefits would i recieve by upgrading to a 16x Dvd drive? Would i get a better picture or anything?

No, watching DVD only requires 1x or 2x (don't remember exactly). If you want to transfer files from the DVD, then of course the faster the better.
