Defrag Problem

I've been trying to help my roommate fix/speed up his computer for a while now, but I've running out of options.

He's got a piece of crap Gateway that runs Windows 98...and anytime that he wants to run any software, it takes a million years to load up, and freezes all the time.

At first, i thought the problem might be a shortage of RAM, but he's got 128 MB of RAM, which seems like it should be enough. After that, I tried running the scandisk utility, and that didn't come back with any problems.

I tried running a couple different virus scanners and they didn't come back with anything.

Now, I've tried running the defrag utility with nothing else running (no other programs), and I get a message back that says that there's low memory, and it won't run. I've tried running it in safe mode too, and that didn't work either...

Any suggestions???

ps...i tried convincing him to upgrade to XP, but he won't do it.

See if you can get him to clean out his HDD of any old or non essential files/programs. Disable virtual memory, restart in safe mode and attempt defrag.

Throw in some spare ram if possible (just for the defrag).

and if he won't do as you suggest, then tell him he needs to deal with a Gateway rep (i'm sure he'll be coming back to you real soon after that ). "Help me, help you." --Jerry Maguire
