Optical Mouse problem~~~help needed

My mouse will sometimes just shut off. I have an optical mouse and after about a half hour the red light shuts off and the pointer will not move. The only solution i have been able to find is to restart my computer. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

Is the mouse connected to a USB hub? If so, connect the power adapter if it comes with one.

All I can think of is try the new Intellipoint software from Microsoft if you don't have it already. Same as Deftones17, I lift the mouse up and the light will come back. With my other optical mouse for my laptop, I found out that my wires is broken inside near the usb plug. I guess jamming the plug too much did it.

If all else fails (or if you just wanna get a new one), call up microsoft. they will ask for serial number on mouse and box that it came in and your shipping address. they will send you a new one without having to send back your (broken?) mouse. turnaround time is approx. 1-2 weeks.

I've encountered this same problem with one of my computers. I use the IntelliMouse Optical... shuts off after a while. However when I use the PS/2 port it never happens. USB issue with the motherboard?

So, basically... have you tried using your PS/2 port instead of the USB Port?

I used to use it but then it would seem a little unresponsive.

It was Like trying to run in water.

It may be a problem with the usb port not providing enough power. I would buy a powered hub and see if that solves the problem.

By the way is the usb mouse plugged directly into the computer or into a keyboard with usb ports?

yeah, I do myself prefer to use the USB over the PS/2 port.

My Microsoft Optical mouse started turning itself off a couple months ago. At first it'd turn off for just a second, then come back on. It then went to the point that it'd just turn off completely and I rebooted to get it to work. Finally it turned itself off and never came back no matter what I did. I was using both built in USB and a powered hub.

I just went ahead and replaced it with a logitech mouse since this is the 2nd M$ optical mouse that has quit working on me.

this happened to us 3 times, your mileage may vary. the symptoms were that the red light would go off and it would stay off longer and longer. wiggling the line sometimes seemed to affect it. yes, try the microsoft tech support, they sent me a new one. but after the 3rd one died (we used to use them in our office and it happened to several of us), we gave up on them. they were microsoft intellimouse explorers.
