weird video problem...

I have the DVD patch, so I can play DVDs in Windows Media Player in Win XP. So I hook up an external monitor to my laptop, and the picture shows up fine. But when I play a DVD, everything shows up fine on the monitor except the DVD picture. The Windows media player even shows up, but the actual movie inside the window doesn't. However, the movie does show up on my laptop screen.

I've tried lowering the refresh rates, resolutions, everything, but to no avail. Any ideas?

DVD players must use video overlay to display the video. Secondary video devices usually don't support overlay. This is a MS problem and is an extreme annoyance for home theater computer users. If there's a way to change your external video port to be the primary video device it will work. Try changing external video to be the primary (and maybe shut off the LCD) in your BIOS.

I haven't tried it yet in the BIOS, but I did try to use the ctrl-whatever button combo to switch between LCD and CRT. All to no avail. Thanks X.
