can windows media player play DVDs and VCDs?

i thought it could but i can't figure out how...

if your running winxp and have media player 8... there is a codec to play dvds

and it could always play vcds.. just browse the cd and find the dat file.. and open that window media player

yeah, i put in the dvd and it just sort of sits there. the media player looks like its sort of working but its a black screen. and nothing happens.
