Local Area Connection Status activity on Win2000/XP?

In Win 2000/XP, how do I change the Local Area Connection Status Activity being displayed from packets to bytes (or vice versa)? Some systems show packets and yet others show bytes.

do all the systems have the exact same network cards with same drivers? if not then i think that's what causes some to show bytes and others to packets. i believe if the drivers allow, then it will report bytes, if not then it reverts to reporting packets.

this is mostly theory.

I just re-installed the OS from scratch on the same PC and it shows packets now (it used to show bytes)!

It was the same hardware, same drivers, same OS (but different instance of it).
