what type of price range are you looking for?

sound blaster live is dirt cheap anymore.. still a really good sound card

and you can get a geforce 2 pretty cheap

check pricewatch.com for prices

Video card:
Geforce 3 TI200
MSI and Visiontek make nice ones in the $160-180 range

Sound Card
M Audio Audiophile 2496 or the Delta DiO 2496

These are the best card out there around $200, much better than Creative or Hercules cards.

I do own a Hercules Game Theater XP and love it, but I wish I would have known about these cards before I bought mine

Here is a link for some info, and the cheapest I have seen them:

Since there was no price point listed I just thought I would suggest a few bang for the buck items regardless of their price

The TI200 is a great value at half the price of a TI500 and with an Athlon XP as your processor you don't want to bottleneck it by slapping in a MX400 card or something.

If the sound cards are too steep. I picked up my Game Theater XP at www.newegg.com for $79 shipped. It was a refurb, but it has worked fine for months!

$200 each is more than I was planning to spend. I was trying to stay under the $150 for video and under $75 for sound.

thanks for your input.

For soundcard, I can only recommend the cheap SB Live value. Unless you need inputs, it is a really great card. It has a digital output which will allow you to hear Dolby 5.1 sound on DVD (you still need a decoder though but it sounds MUCH better than the SB Live 5.1 card doing software decoding) and it supports EAX for 3D games. And it is so cheap. You really can't go wrong.

It helps a lot if you say what you want to do with them. Are you a gamer or do you prefer viewing DVD?

Personally I'd save some money on the video card and get a good sound card. Just depends on what you're doing. If you care about sound the Audiophile 2496 is at least an order of magnitude better than a SB card.
