And if so, should it be executed at the ...

C:\

or

Prompt?

Do you mean to do a shut down, like in Windows?

And this is really in DOS, not in a DOS window?

If yes to those, just turn off the computer.

Yeah, if it's just DOS and not DOS window in MS-WINDOWS, then just turning the computer off is the Shut Down command.

I boot up in my Windows 98 based MS-DOS program, and was wondering if I could perform a Windows-based shut down by typing a command. Rather than typing exit, y, waiting for Windows to load, then selecting the shut down feature from the start menu ...

That's what I thought you originally meant ... sorry that I can't give any help (b/c I don't know), but I'm almost certain that there is a command ...

I know there is such a thing. I had an icon on the desktop of my laptop that shut it down. But the bad news is I formatted the harddrive and don't have the shortcut anymore.

I think I did see in one of my computer magazines, a year or so ago, a shutdown batch file for win9x
I'll check the sites and see if anything turns up

If your wanting to shutdown from an icon then do this.

Right-click on your Windows 95 or 98 desktop and, in the menu that pops up, choose New and Shortcut. In the dialogue box that appears, type the command line C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe, exitWindows with a space before user only. Click on Next and name the new shortcut something clever like "Shut Down". Click on Finish.

Now a "Shut Down" icon appears on your desktop. Double-click on it and you’re out.

Now if your wan'ting to bootstraight to DOS instead of having to go to windows first...then do this.

Click start then click run. Type msconfig and click ok. Click on advanced and put a check in enable startup menu. Click ok and ok again the click yes/ok to restart.

This will bring up the win98 / ME startup menu on start where you can select optoin 6 or 5 command prompt only.
Granted there is no true DOS for winME so it won't have that option.

Perhaps a little clarification on what exactly you are doing and/or trying to do could be in order. Even what OS you have would be helpful.

Or if your booting to a DOS mode and just wanting to shutdown as opposed to finishing load to windows then shutdown just do what nmja suggested and push the power button.
