Motherboards/Chipsets

What is the difference between a motherboard and a chipset? I have read about nVidia's new chipset and the VIAKT266A chipset, but I always thought they were motherboards. Can someone please clarify? What are some of the best motherboards and chipsets?

A chipset is literally that: A set of chips that are designed to do something. There are various kinds of chipsets. For example, there are GRAPHICS chipsets for graphics cards, like the TNT, TNT2, Geforce, Geforce2, and Geforce3 chipsets from nVidia. There are also other graphics cards chipsets from other manufacturers (such as the VooDoo and Savage chipsets).

The motherboard in a computer is basicially like a big array of communication channels for all the components to be able to send and recieve data to and from each other. There needs to be a chipset on this motherboard that handles that communication. There are all kinds of chipsets and different chipsets are good for different things, and they offer different features. For example, the motherboard I have, which is the K266Plus-R from IWill comes with the VIA KT133A chipset. This is a chipset that's designed to support AMD Athlon Thunderbird and Duron processors. It's a really great chipset (and considered one of the best motherboards using the VIA KT133A chipset). Of course, it has it's drawbacks. Mainly this chipset (and consequently, this motherboard) does not support faster DDR RAM... so I am stuck with slow PC133.

Here's a good (albiet slightly outdated) article on motherboards:
