The link is now dead, any other deals out there? A friend is looking for a cheap, new or used, computer, and only has $300. He has a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and just wants the computer to send emails (with pics of his kid), to chat, and to read the news.

Any ideas? I saw that dell's website (www.dell.com) has an auction for used computers, but was wondering if there was anything with fixed prices. Like I said, he doesn't need much, I am sure he would be happy with a 200 mhz processor and a couple gig hard drive, 64mg ram.

It looks like it is not available any more, must have been a closeout item.

Are there any places to buy used computers? My friend isn't looking for anything fancy, just cheap. He has a monitor and a keyboard already.

Try computergeeks.com. Look under systems/servers.

Their downside is they're so overloaded, their customer service is nonexistent. But they have several old Dells (PII's) for $150 or less. Go to dell's website and go under support, then scroll for model number (like XPSRxxx), look up technical documentation and you can get ALL the infor on boards, etc.

Heat, it's just a session timeout.. go to circuitcity.com and search on desktops with 800-999mhz chips. It's there. Compaq 4000 for 399

Ah, that was what I was looking for (computers with between 200 & 300 mhz and a few gig hard drive for $150 to $200).

Another question: None of them have operating systems. Can I buy "used" operating systems? Say, Windows 98? I don't want my friend to spend $100 on Windows or however much a new version costs.

Matchpenalty, I can find the computer, but when I try to go to checkout it tells me to select what store I want to get it from. The store (used to be stores) listed all say that they have none available. If I try to go past that page it kicks me out of the checkout process.
