Will FTP work with a firewall install?

I got this pain in the arse firewall a work and thinking of installing a ftp browser to search for MP3. So, will it work? Kazaa, Morpheus, and WinMX are out of the question.

As long as outbound-initiated port 21 is open.

Of course that depends on the FTP site using the standard FTP port, but many, how should we say, less-than-standard sites, use different ports to confuse the authorities.

mysterX,

You can verify access to FTP sites via your browser by using the URL of the FTP site with or without a port number or password. If you don't use these, you get the default of anonymous access of "unknown" from your IP address to their port 21. If your firewall blocks access to port 21, then it is no go unless the site is setup to a port number that your firewall allows.

An example of the command you manually type in is:

ftp://anonymous:[email protected]:21/

where:
  • anonymous is the optional login name. If you don't include one, the default is anonymous login. If you use a login name, the password field is required, otherwise, don't use a password field either.
  • password is the password for the login name that you used.
  • @ is a seperator.
  • ftp.cdrom.com represents the ftp site name so substitute the site desired.
  • :21 is the optional port number. If you don't include this, then the browser uses the default FTP port number 21. As X has said in the post above this one, some sites use different port numbers to confound lazy people using browsers or to insure that a real ftp client is used. Some sites may require a @ in the password which in effect blocks browsers since you would have two of those in the command line.
The above URL works in my IE browser, although if you want to check, it might be better if you simply entered ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/gutenberg/ into your browser to see if you can access that site via port 21.

To me, any employer that installs a comprehensive firewall might also have ponied up for a nosy snooping tool. Their annual licenses are quite cheap, and they can summarize what employees are downloading or visiting into categories such as general pictures, porn pictures, job/resume sites, competitor sites, uploads, etcetera. I'd probably get paranoid and not even try downloading MP3 with the work machine.

mysterX, have you tried the "MP3Voyeur" that I mentioned in the Best Alternatives to Napster thread? This product seems right up your alley as the next thing to try if your machine is on a common departmental network.
