I just got the Microsoft Intelli Optical Mouse and I was wondering how I could reprogram one of the buttons...

I love the thumb-back button, but the ring-forward button is not used at all, I would like to make this button into "open link in new window"...

Is this possible, and if so, how?

On your Control Panel, the Mouse option will have some additional new tabs for adjusting the options of your MS Optical Mouse buttons.

METHOD:

1. StartButton --> SETTINGS --> CONTROL PANEL
2. Click on the MOUSE icon in your Control Panel.

are you using the intellipoint software or generic ps2 mouse drivers?

(if you don't have the intellipoint software in there then throw it in and fire it up as described above)

Well, I bought the mouse off ebay and got a good deal on it... now i am thinking.. maybe i am missing something... there was no software that came with it...

I just plugged it in the USB port, and plug&play kicked in... good to go... win2k recognized it immediately... but it did not come with any software

yep, there's the problem then. grab the intellipoint 3.2 drivers either from microsoft or at download.com:

http://download.cnet.com/downloads/1,10150,0-10001-103-0-1-7,00.html?tag=srch&qt=intellipoint&cn=&ca=10001

once installed you will have the appropriate control panel to modify the buttons.

p.s. if the above url isn't completely html'ed then just copy and paste it into address bar.

Well, i gotta thank you for the drivers... that is what i needed...

BUT...

What a nightmare...!

I installed the said drivers... and all was good... i got to reprogram the mouse buttons and such, but the mouse control itself went all to hell... I could not move very precisely at all... if i tried to move on a 45degree angle on the screen over a letter, it would completely jump all the way over the letter...

Then, it took me about 6 reboots to get RID of the drivers... i didn't have any mouse for 4 of the reboots... had to search around with the keyboard... you don't realize how dependent on that mouse you really are...

But, now I am back to normal... no reprogramming, but the mouse works the way i need it to!

Thank you for helping... I do appreciate...

hmm, sorry to hear that. how 'bout plugging it into the ps2 port? i think the problem was the mouse refresh on the usb was conflicting with what was on the software. If you're willing to risk it (tho i don't see why there'd be a problem) i'd say give it a shot...don't waste those other buttons
