CNN Max is being dropped from HBO Max November 17

That’s because CNN is trying to launch another streaming service. Didn’t they try this a few years ago and it failed miserably?

Like going back to HBO Max, someone’s making the big bucks backtracking like this. Maybe even the same guy.

The amount of backtracking (from the name, to sports, cartoons/movies, and now CNN and news) is insane with this company. I'm quite surprised how lucky they have been in the box office this year.

Yep, CNN+ launched shortly before or after (can't remember which) David Zaslav took over Warners, and he pulled the plug about a month (if that) after it launched. I've heard the new CNN standalone is going to be geared toward younger viewers - which will probably result in that crashing and burning as well.

All these vultures pushing for ever bigger mergers until there's only one super-conglomerate, and they'll somehow still be losing money on streaming.

I mean if they were making money hand over fist with streaming revenue, they wouldn't be getting bought out in the first place...

That article is kind of jumping the gun. A potential sale is nowhere near close to happening let alone another merger.

They're also considering selling parts of the company or the whole company too:
"Warner Bros. Discovery Initiates Review of Potential Alternatives to Maximize Shareholder Value" https://prnewswire.com/news-releases/warner-bros-discovery-initiates-review-of-potential-alternatives-to-maximize-shareholder-value-302590176.html "Through this process, the Warner Bros. Discovery Board will evaluate a broad range of strategic options, which will include continuing to advance the Company's planned separation to completion by mid-2026, a transaction for the entire company, or separate transactions for its Warner Bros. and/or Discovery Global businesses. As part of the review, the Company will also consider an alternative separation structure that would enable a merger of Warner Bros. and spin-off of Discovery Global to our shareholders."

Interesting timing. WB just also announced that they will look at offers for acquisition in full or for segments of the whole.

Sometimes I just don’t get the dynamics of Hollywood. Discovery hasn’t owned WB that long, now they want to get out.

As for the price increase, I just re-upped at a discounted rate for a year last month, so I’m not stressing about it.

HBO Max has a BF 12 month promo at $2.99/month with ads.

I know, I know you all hate ads.

Offer expires December 1st

I saw that and am tempted to finally do it.

That said, how obtrusive are the ads? Anybody have experience with this?

The next tier without ads is $185 per year, and that's a lot over $36.

The most recent info I can find says they show about 6 minutes of ads per hour.

There's bundles with other services that might be appealing, if you're already subscribed to other streaming services.

You can get HBO MAX, Disney+, and Hulu, all without ads, for $32.99/month

This lists some other bundle options, but beware that some are for the ad tier:

Has anyone by some chance checked out the new 4K remastered episodes of Mad Men on HBO Max? Apparently there are scenes that you end up seeing crew members in the shots because it was mastered incorrectly.

Hi whotony,

We recently announced that Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO.
This unites our leading entertainment service with Warner Bros.’ iconic stories,
bringing some of the world’s most beloved franchises like Harry Potter, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Casablanca,
Game of Thrones
and the DC Universe together with Stranger Things, Wednesday, Squid Game,
Bridgerton
and KPop Demon Hunters.

What’s changing? Nothing is changing today.
Both streaming services will continue to operate separately.
We have more steps to complete before the deal is closed, including regulatory and shareholder approvals.
You’ll hear from us when we have more to share.
In the meantime, we hope you’ll continue to enjoy watching as much as you want, whenever you want - all on your current membership plan.
We know you might have questions. Check out our Help Center for more information or contact us at any time.
Thank you for choosing Netflix. We’re committed to bringing you more great TV shows, movies, games and live programming.

There is a new hockey series on HBO Max that was recently released called “Heated Rivalry” that has been getting a lot of publicity. It has an 88% on RT.

I don’t plan to make a thread about it because I know the subject matter is probably not really comfortable for some here. It’s basically a LGBTQ love story with 2 male hockey players. Anyone heard of it?

Does HBO Max usually have shit transfers of older movies? I’m watching The Brothers McMullin and it’s barely watchable. Less than VHS quality. I don’t or don’t remember seeing any movies on the service, but how can they have a sucky transfer?
