Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

I'm still a little confused by what I've been reading. I have AT&T Fiber for broadband internet, but no TV service. Is my understanding correct that AT&T is going to bundle HBO Max for free with my fiber internet?

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

AT&T provides internet service only. They also offer UVerse which is AT&T, and your need that plus the tier that has HBO in order to get HBOMax. Although now I think they’re changing their TV service to AT&T TV and also now owns DirectTV.

So, what does the following statement refer to in that context?
Also subscribers of premium AT&T mobile and broadband services, will be offered bundles with HBO Max at no extra charge.

Oh nice! Where did you read that? I have Gigabit. Only thing I’ve read was on the HBOMax site that said this:
“Offer available only to new and existing HBO NOW subscribers who subscribe through hbonow.com and are billed by HBO. Offer not currently available to HBO subscribers that obtain their subscriptions through third-party providers that are authorized to distribute the HBO NOW service.“

It looks like they start billing you right away and give you immediate access to HBO Now. Then it'll convert to HBOMax on May 27th.

Sucks for people who have existing accounts to HBO now. I think if you cancel, they don't refund.

HBO Max is killing it adding all this new content.

I currently have the DirecTV Premier package, which is the most expensive package, but with promos I have a discount. HBO Max comes free with that package.

Just unsubscribed my HBO account with Amazon Prime one day before it renewed and resubscribed to HBO Max for $11.99 a month for a year. That'll work for me.

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

I'm reading a lot of threads on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere where the vast majority of people/posters think HBOMax is just some kind of HBO subscription with some old TV shows thrown in the mix. They really have no idea it's a Warner Bros. subscription service with exclusive shows and HBO added as a "perk." I think Warners is going to regret the name they chose for this. I thought so at the time (earlier in this thread) and it looks like it's coming true. I wonder if they'll rebrand it in a year or so.

Any official word when HBO Max(yeah dumb name) will be available on Roku/Amazon Fire Tv devices?

As a back up plan I have a PC( HDMI out to TV) that I use for situation's like this when a streaming service starts out or is available on limited devices.

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

The last time I had HBONow (for the last season of GoT) I tried watching a few movies like Wonder Woman and the aspect ratio was wrong. HBO has been notorious for years about this. Any word on if this practice is going to stop with the new service...? Otherwise it's DOA for me.

Don't they usually wait until after the first showing on HBO?

I'm reading a lot of threads on Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere where the vast majority of people/posters think HBOMax is just some kind of HBO subscription with some old TV shows thrown in the mix. They really have no idea it's a Warner Bros. subscription service with exclusive shows and HBO added as a "perk." I think Warners is going to regret the name they chose for this. I thought so at the time (earlier in this thread) and it looks like it's coming true. I wonder if they'll rebrand it in a year or so.

Yeah, maybe i haven't been following it closely enough, but it seems like they haven't differentiated it that much. It's a tough balance - the name "HBO" definitely has a brand loyalty and certain representation so I totally get they don't want to lose that, but it really did sound like just a slightly more expansive HBO subscription. I don't care about Friends or BBT though I know millions do, but that's a lot of good, varied movies that'll be on the service. I'm looking forward to it, I hope it'll be available via Roku (I can't imagine it won't, but how long will it take.) I haven't heard anything official AT&T about access other than a "learn about" plug when I log into my AT&T account.

That's a lot of Criterion titles that I feel no need to subscribe to the Criterion Channel.

Yeah I read comments on an HBO Max post on Facebook where some asked, "I have HBO Go or Now, why do I need this?" Seems like most don't get that this is a WB service with HBO included and has a much more expansive library. I had to explain to one person and then he finally understood what it was.

Yeah the "HBO" in the name will make this a hard sell to the wife.:(

Me: "Hey I'm going to subscribe to HBOMax"
Her: "...Why? We already have HBO GO..."
Me: "Yeah, but it's not just HBO. There is way more to it. And lots of my DC stuff will be there"
Her: "...But it says HBO in the name. And you already have DC Universe. There's your DC stuff there."
Me: Yeah but...
Her: "Yeah but nothing. You don't need HBOMax. And look! HBOMax costs almost $20 a month too?!?! REALLY??!!"
Me: "FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKK!!!"

Your wife has to sign off on it?

It's a $11.99 per month special until launch day.

Then it goes back up to $14.99

It helps. Ever been married? Have you ever discussed finances with the SO? Something tells me NO...

Understood. You have other bills that take priority over entertainment and you can't get everything you want no matter how enticing it is.

It says in the article I posted above, if you're paying for HBO Now (at $14.99), you might as well change to this service. You're going to pay the same price for much more content on this one.

Here's the excerpt on who can get it for free if you already have HBO:

Subscribers to HBO Now can upgrade to HBO Max free, and HBO subscribers via AT&T can get it free too (that is, HBO customers through DirecTV, U-verse, AT&T TV Now, AT&T TV and AT&T wireless users who can add HBO with certain unlimited plans). And through an April deal with Charter, all of Charter's existing HBO subscribers, including subscribers in its Spectrum Silver and Gold video packages, will automatically be given access to HBO Max for no additional charge.

Since it's coming up soon, are there details in how these grandfathered account get access? Like do we need to create a new login and link it or do we login via our att account?

I feel like some of those Criterion films aren't on the Criterion Channel either which is weird.

Will there be a Criterion category on the service, or did someone just pick out the Criterion films among those listed?
On one hand it seems like a big number of Criterion titles to appear just by chance, but on the other I don't see what Criterion gets out of allowing HBO Max to designate a Criterion section of streaming that will directly compete with their streaming service.

Criterion is a small niche service. I did see they rotate out movies. So I think licensing out their movies to AT&T helps their ability to keep their own service running. I don’t see them competing against each other. Criterion is way too niche.

So there will be a Criterion section? They should put Harold and Maude there.

Re: HBO Max — Warnermedia streaming service launches May 2020

My guess is that the movies that was shown on Criterion Channel was because of the licensing agreement that WB has with them and nothing to do with partnering up with Janus Films to have a tab in their service otherwise they would have made the announcement in a similar fashion like they did with Crunchyroll.

I’m not privy of the details of the licensing agreement with Criterion Channel but I hope it doesn’t hurt the rotating slates of titles from WB.
