Re: Movies Anywhere - News, Rumors & Discussion

I got a reminder from MA that I had seven days to reconnect my account plus an e-mail from Amazon about it, so I gave up and reconnected. VUDU, Amazon, and Apple, but not Microsoft and Fandango. I just checked VUDU, and I got one “new” movie, Final Destination 1, and everything else was in order of recent purchases, so that’s a win, I guess.

All my recent purchases had already been migrating to my other services, except Shazam and Godzilla King of Monsters, and I wonder if it’s related to my buying them in UHD. Not really a huge issue because I’d likely watch them on VUDU anyway, but kind of annoying. They ARE showing in MA.

Re: Movies Anywhere - News, Rumors & Discussion

i updated everything and didn't lose a thing in Vudu. that's what i was most concerned with. big discrepancy between MA and Vudu, but i guess there is 600 or so movies not MA or at least i redeemed before MA...

Re: Movies Anywhere - News, Rumors & Discussion

I didn't end up losing any titles I had purchased, but the ones that my friend had shared with me years prior, via Ultraviolet maybe? Does anyone remember when that was a thing, sharing your library with others? So maybe that's why they disappeared maybe? Idk. I'm at such a loss of fighting with VUDU and MA and not being able to get either side to actually help me out.

Yeah, I was unable to get it work myself, but UV sharing was definitely a thing. There’s a recent thread about it.

Just wondering : How come Sony Pictures Classics releases aren't part of Movies Anywhere? Fox Searchlight pictures are.

Edit : Looks like a lot of Sony Pictures Classics are. But I bought Pain and Glory and it is not MA, though it is a Sony Pictures Classic release.

Pain and Glory says "Early Access" on Vudu. The Blu-ray doesn't come out until 1/21. I think for many titles out digitally before the disc, MA sync doesn't arrive until the release of the disc.

Maybe that’s it.
But LOTS of pre-orders are labeled as MA titles, and featured on the MA website and this one is not.

Re: Movies Anywhere - News, Rumors & Discussion

I thought Pain and Glory was only distributed by SPC, not the production company that made it. Which is why it’s not MA. But I don’t know how that foreign releases work like that.

Well, most of those are pre-orders, not early access.

The only one that's early access is Motherless Brooklyn, and its from a different studios, Warner Bros. Different studios may have different policies.

Often times, Sony Pictures Classics carries movies that Sony didn't initially produce. They only bought distribution rights with more limitations than movies that Sony makes themselves. That is why you rarely see Sony discounting SPC releases on home video like they do for their own productions they control 100%.

Sony Pictures Classics functions more like Criterion than Sony's own releases.

Thank you for the explanation. That must be the correct explanation. Pain and Glory is now out of Early Release period and still is not MA. Disappointing but what I expected.

Re: Movies Anywhere - News, Rumors & Discussion

Someone posted this over in the MeWe groups. I thought it was interesting, so I'll repost it here:

Streaming Quality Test
Not sure if anyone cares but I did a limited, non-extensive, non-conclusive, test on streaming quality for 4K movies with regards to digital retailers. Of course this isn't 100% accurate as there could be variables that differ within each test but I tried to replicate the test for each service as best I could. My wireless connection was as equally stable and fast for each test. I used the first five minutes for each service for each movie. An Apple TV 4K connected to an LG OLED E8 TV were used to stream these movies directly from their respective apps. These were the results:

Avengers Endgame 4K Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos
Movies Anywhere
Average bitrate video: 24.98 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 640.15 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 31.68 mbps

Disney+
Average bitrate video: 16.85 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 768.11 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 28.77 mbps

Vudu
Average bitrate video: 13.71 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 577.17 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 16.70 mbps

Amazon Video (4K/HDR10)
Average bitrate video: 10.00 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 192.45 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 12.52 mbps

Note: I did not include iTunes in my testing of Avengers Endgame since it's only offered in HD.

Guardians of the Galaxy 4K Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos
Movies Anywhere
Average bitrate video: 24.08 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 640.15 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 32.80 mbps

Disney+
Average bitrate video: 16.17 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 768.11 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 28.57 mbps

Vudu
Average bitrate video: 13.70 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 449.17 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 16.68 mbps

Amazon Video (4K/HDR10)
Average bitrate video: 9.60 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 192.48 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 12.59 mbps

Godzilla: King of the Monsters 4K Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos
iTunes
Average bitrate video: 26.05 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 770.23 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 30.83 mbps

Movies Anywhere
Average bitrate video: 24.44 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 640.15 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 31.55 mbps

Vudu
Average bitrate video: 13.14 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 449.17 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 25.08 mbps

Note: Probably should've realized before but Amazon Video does not offer this movie in 4K but can assume to follow similar results as Avengers Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy above and Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood below.

It (2017) 4K Dolby Vision/ Dolby Atmos
iTunes
Average bitrate video: 13.93 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 770.23 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 24.63 mbps

Movies Anywhere
Average bitrate video: 24.07 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 640.15 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 31.59 mbps

Vudu
Average bitrate video: 13.51 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 577.17 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 17.79 mbps

Note: Probably should've realized before but Amazon Video does not offer this movie in 4K but can assume to follow similar results as Avengers Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy above and Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood below.

Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood 4K (mixed HDR)
iTunes (4K/Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos)
Average bitrate video: 16.25 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 386.24 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 24.25 mbps

Movies Anywhere (4K/HDR10)
Average bitrate video: 24.24 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 256.15 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 31.44 mbps

Vudu (4K/Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos)
Average bitrate video: 13.68 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 385.17 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 21.62 mbps

Amazon Video (4K/HDR10)
Average bitrate video: 9.82 mbps
Average bitrate audio: 192.45 kbps
Indicated bitrate peak: 13.36 mbps

While all the tests vary it seems like Movies Anywhere is the most consistent with arguably the highest quality streaming. Likewise it can be said that Amazon Video offers the worst streaming experience. I did not test the FandangoNOW digital service nor the Google Play service as they do not offer native apps on Apple TV 4K. I think it can be said though that these differences in quality, perhaps with the exception of Amazon Video, are imperceivable when viewed from a normal distance at home.

Interesting they avoided adding in the UHD disc bitrates to compare with.

Do they need to be? Everyone knows that the physical formats blow streaming out of the water in terms of bitrate.

They should, simply to call out why physical media is still wanted by some.

Well, if you want to get upset that other people don't have the same priorities than you, then you're going to get upset often.

Why don't you add the UHD BD bitrates to those numbers, if you care so much?

Ugh...……….never said I cared. And if you read what I wrote, I said "Interesting they avoided adding in the UHD disc bitrates to compare with."

That's it. Nothing more or less. Have a seat Jay, I'll pour you a decaf.

The implication was that they deliberately "avoided" adding in the UHD disc bitrates, as if they had that readily available but hid it for... reasons. Instead, it's far more likely UHD disc was just outside the realm of what they were comparing, different streaming services, and didn't have the UHD disc info at all, let alone compiled and ready for inclusion.

I get it, you think UHD disc is better, and you wanted to point that out. The passive aggressive tone wasn't the best way to do that though, and complaining that others aren't interested in disc v streaming comparisons and didn't do the comparison work for you by suggesting a deliberate conspiracy wasn't great either.

Personally, I thought the info was helpful. I mostly own UHD content on UHD disc, but some of those come with digital codes, and some 3D Blu-rays I've bought had digital codes that redeemed in UHD. If I ever have a situation where I may opt to stream one of those titles, it's good to know which offers the most bitrate, since that indicates likely the best quality, although that's not guaranteed depending on their encodes.

Got a free movie from MA. Not sure why. Picked Steel Magnolias. Says 4K on MA but only ported to HDX on Vudu. Oh well. Free is free.
