Tubi -- ad supported streaming service

Just found Tubi TV on the Roku. Tons of newer and older movies plus 1 live TV channel that shows movies.

I check in on the channel every month and it has quite a few quality movie offerings, -y'know, movies you've actually heard of. I'm sure it's ad-supported though I don't know who or what entity is behind it. Much like Crackle or Shout!, I can appreciate what they have but I can't say I've ever watched anything on there.

re: Tubi -- ad supported streaming service

Tubi has acquired tons of old NBC Universal content.

https://deadline.com/2019/02/tubi-an...es-1202567194/

Tubi and NBCUniversal have set a deal that will see a trove of nearly 400 vintage TV episodes and films land on the ad-supported Tubi streaming service.

The titles covered by the deal will bring a nostalgic tear to many Gen-Xer eyes. The roster includes Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The A-Team, Punky Brewster, The Incredible Hulk, Quantum Leap and the original versions of Magnum, P.I., Battlestar Galactica, The Bionic Womanand She-Ra: Princess of Power.

The ad-supported area of streaming has gained momentum of late, with NBCUniversal announcing plans for its own service launching in 2020 on the Comcast and Sky footprints and Viacom acquiring Pluto TV.

“We’re excited to be a home to this robust library of world-class, iconic content from NBCUniversal that appeals across generations,” said Adam Lewinson, Chief Content Officer at Tubi. “We are aggressively working to expand our library, and this is one of many deals to come for Tubi.”

In January, Tubi announced ambitious plans for 2019, including a nine-figure investment in new content. The company also highlighted recent growth, including a steep increase in viewing in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Tubi’s current library numbers about 12,000 movies and TV series, or about 40,000 hours of content. Widely distributed for several years now across Amazon’s Fire TV, Roku iOS, Android, Xfinity X1 and other outlets, the app has a high degree of visibility.

re: Tubi -- ad supported streaming service

I wish someone like Tubi or Crackle would pick up the 70s spider-man series. I'd like to re-watch that. But it will be nice to re-visit some old QL or Battlestar from time to time. Even with 10000 commercials.

We get Tubi, here, as well. I actually found the ads were not bad, at all. Much fewer than regular network programming.

I downloaded the Tubi app on my iOS devices as is the only way for Canadians to watch S2 of One Punch Man. I believe that they have a PS4 app which I’ll download.

I wish the Canadian version had the old NBCUNIVERSAL shows.

In case you want to torture yourself. All 15 seasons of The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice are now available on this streaming channel.

Politics aside, the only really good season of The Apprentice was the 1st one that Bill Rancic won. I actually watched that one on DVD and was hooked on it.

I guess MGM, who produced the show, wanted to get some money back from making it and sold the rights to Tubi.

re: Tubi -- ad supported streaming service

I have to admit that i am a big fan of Tubi. It has such a treasure trove of garbage B Movies, for any movie fan its heaven. Recently i have been working my way through a variety of Blaxploitation movies, and primarily the work of Rudy Ray Moore. I am 100% positive that this is the channel that RedletterMedia uses for its Best of the Worst as almost every movie they watch is on it. It also has a lot of old movies that the bigger streamers simply couldn't give a damn about. It amazes me that this channel is free, and i would probably pay for it if they ever started charging (not Netflix prices, but $5 is doable).

I like Tubi a lot. They have surprisingly good content, they have few commercials, and the 10-second countdown to the commercial is great.

re: Tubi -- ad supported streaming service

I remember I tried watching CQ on Tubi about a year ago. There appeared to be ads appearing every 5 minutes. I'm assuming those days are over now, correct?

Correct. If there were ads every five minutes, I'd be gone.

Yes, I've only watched one or two movies on Tubi, but I was very surprised by the scarcity of commercials.

I watched Don't Fuck in The Woods there last night. Only 3 commercial breaks with 3-5 ads a piece. Not bad. But then again, the actual movie was only about 70 minutes long.

Re: Tubi -- ad supported streaming service

Fox Corp. is in discussions about acquiring Tubi, the ad-supported free streaming service, in a deal worth more than $500 million, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing anonymous sources.

With Tubi, Rupert Murdoch’s TV broadcasting and cable company would be adding a dedicated streaming component — offering over 20,000 older TV shows and movies to watch for free — to its portfolio to capture the surge in internet-video viewing.

Reps for Fox Corp. and Tubi rep declined to comment.

Fox Corp.’s business comprises Fox Broadcasting and local TV stations, Fox News and Fox Business, and Fox Sports, after the dismantling of 21st Century Fox and the sale of most of 20th Century Fox’s assets to Disney last year.

The report of Fox’s interest in Tubi comes amid a surge of activity in the ad-supported streaming space. Last year, Viacom (now ViacomCBS) acquired free-streamer Pluto TV for $340 million in cash. Other players vying for eyeballs with premium free video services include the Roku Channel, Amazon’s IMDb TV, and Walmart’s Vudu, while this summer Comcast and NBCUniversal are planning to launch a free, ad-supported version of the Peacock streaming service.

In other potential M&A activity, NBCU is in negotiations to buy Walmart’s Vudu movie and TV show streaming division, which includes a free AVOD tier with some 10,000 titles.

Tubi was founded as AdRise, a video ad-tech startup in 2010. It launched Tubi TV in 2014 and eventually changed its name and focus to ad-supported VOD. The company has raised $34 million from investors including Lionsgate, MGM, Jump Capital, Cota Capital, Foundation Capital, Streamlined Ventures and individuals including Bobby Yazdani, Mark Amin, and Noosheen and Zod Nazem.

Tubi offers 20,000 library movies and TV series — all for free with ads — from over 250 content partners including Warner Bros., Paramount, Lionsgate and NBCUniversal.

In December 2019, according to Tubi, its monthly active user base grew to 25 million (up from 20 million six months earlier) while total viewing time hit over 163 million hours watched, a 160% year-over-year increase. (The figures aren’t independently verified.) Last year, Tubi said, headcount increased 78% to over 229 full-time employees.

In 2020, Tubi said its content spending will “exceed nine figures,” or more than $100 million, to expand on its current library. Last year Tubi pegged content spending at about $100 million.

I want to think more content will be a good thing, but have that nagging feeling they're going to screw it up.

Yeah, I just recently got on the Tubi bandwagon, and was surprised how few commercial breaks there were (and usually really short ones too). I'd hate for this to end up as commercially bloated as Crackle

Re: Tubi -- ad supported streaming service

Watching a film on DVD today (The Canyon) and it froze up with 30+ minutes to go. Wouldn't work on multiple players at the exact same spot and couldn't get past that point no matter what I tried. Found it on Tubi , which I had never used, and the experience was a positive one. Jumped ahead to where I was and finished the movie. Don't believe I dealt with any commercials.

Just saw a commercial for Tubi and I've been pronouncing it wrong all these years. I was saying it was "tuh-bee" but the commercial was "too-bee."
