Super Bowl will be available for free streaming

Cordcutters will be able to watch the Super Bowl live this Sunday with no TV provider login required.

How to Watch the Super Bowl When You Don’t Have Cable

CBS, the network that is broadcasting this year’s big game, will stream the Super Bowl free through apps on a broader set of devices than in the past. Owners of Roku’s set-top boxes, Apple TV, Google’s Chromecast, Microsoft’s Xbox One and Amazon’s Fire box can download the free CBS Sports or National Football League apps and watch the Super Bowl with no login credentials required, the company said.

“For us, our goal is to expose the game to the largest audience possible for the Super Bowl,” said Jeffrey Gerttula, a senior vice president of CBS Sports Digital, in an interview. That, of course, translates into maximizing the number of eyeballs on the lucrative TV ads that play during the Super Bowl, which have sold for a record $5 million for 30 seconds of ad time.

How to stream the Super Bowl for free without a cable subscription

If you don’t have access to cable, there are a number of ways to watch the Super Bowl this Sunday.

CBS, which is broadcasting Super Bowl 50 at 3:30 p.m. PT, will live stream the game on its website and through a bevy of platforms that have the CBS Sports app, including: iOS, Android, Windows 10, Xbox One, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, and Amazon Fire HD tablets. You won’t need any log-in credentials to access the feed, but keep in mind that given the NFL’s exclusive contract with Verizon, non-Verizon customers won’t be able to stream games to their smartphone. However, PCs, laptops, tablets, and devices like Xbox One are OK.

This year I happen to be going to a Super Bowl party so I'm all set but I'm glad people are starting to see that, okay, we have a huge deal of a show and we'd better put it in front of people (even if it is to make more money).

Wish I could find a way to stream the Oscars without a cable provider.

I'm sure the CBS-Cox dispute was a factor as well. Glad people are getting more options.

Yeah. Glad to find I can use the Xbxo One app rather than bringing my Roku down from the bedroom TV.
Cox has also made ESPN Deportes available to all subscribers until Moday for another less-than-ideal alternative.
It's crazy that I pay over $100/mo to Cox for cable and Internet and I still can't watch the Super Bowl feed without a work-around

Depending on where you're located, and over the air antenna may be an option that could work for you.

Oh, I know but that would require messing with all sort of settings and I've got a complex, integrated system that I don't really want to mess with.

Will I be able to watch the commercials via Streaming as well? That's the only reason the Mrs watches the game.

Yes. According to the NYTimes article:

This year’s Super Bowl, the 50th, will be the second that CBS has streamed free, though it will be the first time its streaming apps play the commercials while they are shown on television, Mr. Gerttula added.

I saw an ad on my Roku for the CBS Sports app and thought it sounded too good to be true - i.e. watching without logging in credentials. But apparently it is. Very cool of them. I'll probably leave it on in the background all day.

Don't like football but I'll probably check out part of it streaming just to see how the quality is. And it's funny that so many people think you NEED cable to see it otherwise as it's ALWAYS been on the over-the-air networks.

Did anyone stream the Super Bowl?

How did it work out? Where there any glitches? How was the video/audio quality?

I streamed it upstairs where I don't have cable so that I could watch the game as I worked around the house. Used my xbox and it worked great. Was maybe 20 seconds my cable feed, but great picture n

I didn't see this thread when it was first posted, or I would have given it a shot.

Checked during the pregame show- wrong frame rate (as usual), 2-channel sound and about a minute behind the broadcast. Didn't see a single second of the game through any medium :)

But you did record it on Beta and convert it to CED for future generations, right? ;)

Future generations only need to see what was broadcast via analog. :) Nothing after that matters.
