Re: Dish's Sling TV - Streaming TV

I re-upped for a month with the Epix movie pack for shits and grins, the on-demand for Epix kind of works. Most of the movies are on Netflix, so it's more like paying $5 for 4 Netflix channels of random crap

Re: Dish's Sling TV - Streaming TV

I noticed new channels tonight. WE, truTV, and some others. If the price stays (relatively) the same, this is an amazing deal. The quality far surpasses what I was getting through the Dish satellite.

Apparently if you purchase a new XBox One, you will get a free 3 month trial.

Current XBox One owners get a 1 month free trial.

Signed up for the 1 month trial and so far I really like it. Mainly got it for El Rey since it is not in HD on DirecTV and is like 3 tiers higher than what I have. I download the app last night on my phone and it works just as well.

A&E, History, H2 and Lifetime were added to the core line-up today.

I think anything NBC/U based is out of the question for right now.

Maybe it's time to stop with the core package?

Any more additions, I can see the price creep happening, and before we know we'll be back where we started.

I think there's still room in the core package. Outside of ESPN, the channels in the core package benefit from being a part of Sling's Core package, especially IFC, El Rey, etc;

Re: Dish's Sling TV - Streaming TV

I think there's plenty of room in the core package for ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX because they make their money on ads, not charging the provider a fee. Shouldn't raise the price at all.

Incorrect. They charge a re-transmission fee, which would probably be too expensive for a bare minimum service like this.

Anyone else seeing a message that this content can't be streamed on Sling? That's going to piss me of if they start picking and choosing which shows we get. What's next, AMC days no Walking Dead?

I've gotten the error once or twice, but just reset the app and it's fine.

As for actual "Content Restricted" stuff, it's only happening with A&E which is fair since the channel was just added and allows for the DVR-style functionality (go back 3 or so days), I'm sure they'll get it squared away. They may have been better off just doing a forced live stream instead of the added feature if it meant 100% broadcast.

In otherwords, Sling shot themselves in the foot by giving us a new feature that wasn't ready for primetime.

As more and more people get their programming this way, that business model might have to change. The networks certainly don't get a retrans fees from people using OTA antennas, and if a lot less eye balls are seeing their advertising, they would want to get their programming on these services...

I also saw it today with IFC and some Mel Gibson movie as well as A&E and Lifetime. I looked up what was on A&E and they blacked out Twister and another movie.

Hopefully Sling won't cut out again at 9pm tomorrow night for Walking Dead. 2 of the last 3 weeks it's cut out right as the new WD episode starts. Looks like they can't handle the surge of people logging in at the same time...

I might have to subscribe to this. I recently cut the cord, and the hardest part for me is not being able to have the cartoon network always on as background noise

Yeah, I have it for background noise too (Cartoon Network, TBS, and Travel Channel mostly).

Well that certainly changed the playing field. Espeically since this says the service will somehow circumvent the Apple exclusive & will be in place in time for Game of Thrones. I guess this is a separate product from HBO NOW.

So now I can get a lite version basic cable + HBO for $35/mo. Vs the $110 I was paying DirecTV.

If you're comparing HBO and Netflix, they obviously offer a lot of different content so i'm not sure what the point of this statement is.

Re: Dish's Sling TV - Streaming TV

Signed up on Sunday for the free Amazon Fire Stick but it won't be in stock until the end of the month. They have the same deal for a Roku Streaming Stick so if you are planning on ordering and want to do the 3 months to get a free device you should go with the Roku stick so you get it right away.

I even called Sling TV to try to switch but they said their was nothing they could do because I had already ordered the Amazon stick.

Update: I was able to cancel and then resubscribe with the Roku Stick offer. I had to call to do it but I should have the Roku stick by Friday or Monday.
Sounds like an overseas call center but they were very helpful.

Can I still get this free stick thing if I signed up a few weeks ago? I'll call them anyway.

Re: Dish's Sling TV - Streaming TV

I would recommend the Roku Stick over the Amazon Fire Stick (Roku Stick $50 vs. Fire Stick $40). Sling TV mails you the Roku Stick in 2-3 days whereas you have to order the Amazon Stick from Amazon and they won't be in stock until 4/28. Also to get either one you have to sign up for 3 months in advance. If your first month is coming to an end you can just cancel and resign up for the next 3 months.
