TELEVISION

May 5 - Garbage Time with Katie Nolan (Season 3 Premiere) (FOX Sports).
LB - Cool, no need to set the recorder ahead. Hopefully they show all the episodes and not just the premiere.

May 13 - The Last Ship (Complete Season 2) (TNT).
LB - I binged watch the first season via Hulu last year - glad I can do the same for the second season this year.

May 24 - Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life (Season 1 Finale) (FOX).
LB - Weird the season finale (and most likely series finale) is being shown on a Monday when the series have been shown on Sundays.
Well the first showing of each episode has been on Sundays as FOX for the last couple of months has been repeating them on Saturday nights at 11:30 pm ET.

May 25 - The Challenge: Rivals III (Season 28 Premiere) (MTV).
LB - Wish they would show all the episodes and not just the premiere. Won't need to set recorder ahead or have to watch them on MTVs terrible video player.

MOVIES

May 1 - Men With Brooms (2002).
LB - Curling fan here so this has always been one of my favorite movies. Even though I have it on DVD - I'll watch it at least once online.

I don't know why it took so long. It's been off the air for a year and a half and don't think it's ever been released on dvd.

NewFronts: Hulu Renews ‘Mindy Project’ for Season 5, Acquires Ron Howard Beatles Film
Todd Spangler
NY Digital Editor

MAY 4, 2016 | 05:00AM PT

Hulu is bringing back sitcom “The Mindy Project” for season five and drama series “The Path” starring Aaron Paul for a second run, and has secured rights to Ron Howard’s feature-length Beatles documentary.

The announcements are part of the Internet TV service’s slate of programming and new ad initiatives, unveiled Wednesday at the Hulu Upfront presentation at Madison Square Garden Theater.

In other news, Hulu announced a pact with Live Nation Entertainment to launch select concert performances in virtual reality — promising a you-are-there immersive experience for music fans — and detailed new advertising partnerships with Nielsen, Millward Brown and BrightLine.

Hulu will reach 12 million paying U.S. subscribers by the end of May, representing 30% year-over-year growth, according to CEO Mike Hopkins, crediting the service’s mix of originals, broadcast and network TV show pickups, and movies for drawing in users. Netflix, by way of comparison, had 47 million U.S. subs as of the end of March.

Hopkins, on stage at the event Wednesday, confirmed Hulu’s plans to deliver a live-TV package, including sports and entertainment, in 2017. The company, which is owned by Disney, 21st Century Fox and NBCUniversal, has been in talks with its parent companies and others for the service but Hulu is not providing additional details at this point. Hulu’s cable-like service is expected to cost around $40 per month.

“We’re going to fuse the best of linear TV and on-demand, in a deeply personalized experience,” Hopkins said.

Ron Howard’s “The Beatles: Eight Days A Week” (working title), slated to debut in theaters and on Hulu this fall, marks the first documentary feature to premiere exclusively on Hulu after a theatrical run. The film, Hulu’s first licensing deal with Apple Corps Ltd., will launch under the new Hulu Documentary Films arm, which will procure premium original and exclusive documentary titles.

“The Beatles: Eight Days A Week,” featuring rare and exclusive footage, is produced with the cooperation of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison. White Horse Pictures’ Nigel Sinclair, Scott Pascucci and Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment are producing with Howard. Apple Corps’ Jeff Jones and Jonathan Clyde are serving as executive producers, along with Imagine’s Michael Rosenberg and White Horse’s Guy East and Nicholas Ferrall. The film is based on the first part of the Beatles’ career, from 1962-66, the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim.

Comedy series “The Mindy Project” is coming back to Hulu for season five. It’s been a hit for the Internet-streaming service, which picked up the show after Fox canceled it last year. The single-camera sitcom, created by and starring Mindy Kaling, follows a skilled OB/GYN navigating choppy waters of both her personal and professional life. “Mindy Project,” from 3 Arts Entertainment in association with Universal Television, is executive produced by Kaling, Howard Klein, Matt Warburton, Charlie Grandy and Michael Spiller.

“We have had the freedom to try new things that would not fly on broadcast,” Kaling said about her experience with Hulu, citing a scene in which her character shoots breast milk in someone’s face and the ability to say the word “tits.”

Hulu also announced a second election special from “Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog” that will debut exclusively on the service later in 2016, following the first special from the foul-mouthed dog puppet. Robert Smigel will return as the voice and creator of Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog for the brand-new special that will premiere just in time for the November election.

For Hulu, growing its originals slate is a key imperative as it faces aggressive competition from Netflix and Amazon for both customers and content. Hulu’s original programming lineup includes recently announced dark comedy “Shut Eye” starring Jeffrey Donovan and KaDee Strickland; psychological thriller “Chance” starring Hugh Laurie; and an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” starring Elisabeth Moss.

Hulu also is bidding for rights to TV shows: Its most-watched television pickup to date is AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead,” and the network’s “Preacher” graphic-novel adaptation from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will soon be coming exclusively to the service as well, said Craig Erwich, Hulu senior VP and head of content.

Hopkins said the new slate will push Hulu to new heights in 2016. The service streamed more hours during the premiere week of “11.22.63,” the JFK assassination time-travel drama from J.J. Abrams based on Stephen King’s novel, than any single week in 2015, according to Hopkins. He also noted that 70% of Hulu users watch the service on TV, and that most subscribers continue to choose the $8 monthly plan with ads instead of the commercial-free $12 option.

Hulu warmed up the crowd of ad and media execs with high-energy comedic turns from Amy Poehler, Julie Klausner, Billy Eichner of Hulu’s “Difficult People,” as well as Abbi Jacobson Ilana Glazer of Comedy Central’s “Broad City” and Michaela Watkins, Tommy Dewey and Tara Lynne Barr, stars of Hulu original series “Casual.”

Quipped Eichner: “The N-word at this upfront is ‘Netflix.'”

Pushing further into the VR world, the Hulu VR app will add Live Nation’s content to immerse fans in the visual and auditory environment of a live, virtual performance. (Timing of the VR content launch and featured artists will be announced later.) Fans will get to hang out backstage with artists before the show, experience the thrill of walking onstage as crowds cheer and get the best seat in the house for the beginning of the performance.

“No medium has the potential to bring the magic of a live concert to life more than virtual reality,” said Jordan Zachary, Live Nation’s chief strategy officer.

Since Hulu launched its VR app in March, it has added six pieces of additional virtual-reality content, including a piece featuring “The Path” and content from partners TheirWorld and RYOT (acquired last month by AOL). The Hulu app is available for the Samsung Gear VR headset with additional platforms to come soon. According to Hulu, the average time spent with the VR app is 12 minutes.

On the ad-tech front, Hulu announced a partnership with interactive-ad firm BrightLine to be the first streaming service to deliver interactive advertising units built exclusively for connected-TV devices. Havas Media will be the exclusive charter agency for the new interactive-ad product, expected to launch on Hulu this summer.

“The interactivity we’ve known for years on the PC is now coming to the living room,” said Hulu SVP of sales Peter Naylor. “TV really is the new ‘new media’ of today.” He also touted Hulu’s coveted demographics: The service’s viewers have a median age of 33, and 84% of subscribers are 18-49.

With Nielsen, Hulu unveiled a new collaboration that will enable digital ad measurement through Nielsen Digital Ad Ratings to capture OTT viewing in the living-room environment for the first time across devices including Roku, Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, Apple TV and all Hulu-enabled connected-TV devices. Through the partnership, Hulu said it will be able to deliver an accurate measure of viewership beyond the PC for advertisers on a campaign-level basis.

And Hulu announced a deal with market-research firm Millward Brown to deliver studies, research papers and stats including brand affinity metrics for marketers and advertisers spanning OTT environments. IPG Mediabrands’ Magna Global, whose clients include Arby’s, Aveeno, BMW, Coca-Cola, Dunkin’ Donuts and IHOP, will be beta partners at launch.

Hulu also highlighted two brand-integration campaigns. In season two of Jason Reitman’s comedy “Casual,” Goose Island Beer Company is weaving in one of its beers into the storyline: Goose Island IPA is the favorite beer of Alex (Tommy Dewey). In season four of “Mindy Project,” Mindy’s newly redesigned Lexus RX lets her and her friends make a quick getaway in a special trip to Mindy’s alma mater, Princeton.

In a recorded video segment, Ron Howard and Paul McCartney presented a preview clip of “The Beatles: Eight Days A Week,” with the former Beatle saying the film brought back great memories of the group’s early days. Hulu closed out the event by playing the Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night.”

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Hulu inks expansive licensing agreement with Disney-ABC Television Group

Hulu is ramping up its slate of kids programming with a multinetwork licensing agreement with the Disney-ABC Television Group.

The expansive deal, which was announced Thursday, would bring over 500 episodes and a selection of original movies from Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD to Hulu. It stands as Hulu’s biggest content licensing agreement with the Disney brand.

----------------------------

The agreement would make Hulu the exclusive subscription video-on-demand home to seven programs, including past season episodes of Disney Channel’s spy comedy “K.C. Undercover,” Disney XD’s “Gravity Falls” and “Star vs. The Forces of Evil,” and former Disney Channel series “Dog With a Blog” and “Austin & Ally.”

The pact also includes exclusive subscription streaming rights to a number of programs from Disney Junior, including “Sheriff Callie’s Wild West” and “Henry Hugglemonster.”

Previous seasons of the series will be available for streaming on Hulu later this month. Subsequent seasons will be added to the Santa Monica-based service in their entirety after the last episode of each season airs.

----------------------------

The new deal also includes more than 20 Disney Channel original movies.

Hulu is losing "same season" CW shows, but those will remain on apps and cable VOD.

Apparently Hulu wasn't happy that they were only getting 5 episodes at any given time and wanted full seasons.

This sucks. I was fine with the 5 latest episodes. Full seasons would have been nice, but a few episodes is much better than nothing.

The only positive news is that Netflix will get the complete season a couple weeks (instead of months) after the finale. I guess I'll just wait until the season is over and binge it on Netflix.

Here's more info:

The CW To Extend Netflix Streaming Deal After Hulu Ends In-Season Pact

With the future of the CW on broadcast secured via new deal with Tribune, the attention shifted to the expiring SVOD pacts with Netflix and Hulu. The library Netflix pact, which covers previous seasons of CW series, is being extended, with the window following the season finale on the CW significantly shortened, while the in-season rights deal with Hulu is not being renewed.

The Netflix pact, which is being finalized, is being handled by the CW parent companies Warner Bros. and CBS Corp. whose studios Warner Bros. TV and CBS TV Studios produce all of the network’s shows and are the ones getting the revenue. The Hulu deal was made by and directly benefits the CW.

The Hulu agreement only covered next-day access to the most recent “rolling five” episodes of CW series. I hear Hulu was interested in a new deal if it could get in-season stacking rights, whose value has increased dramatically over the last couple of years. I hear that was not an option for the CW’s parent companies, which is understandable because in-season stacking rights undercut the value of complete seasons and would’ve likely jeopardized a new deal with Netflix.

For Hulu, having only five episodes at a time of the heavily serialized CW dramas did not work at the price point offered by the network, so the streaming service cooled negotiations about a month ago.

While some back-and-forth with Hulu continued, the focus over the past few weeks was on CW owners’ negotiations with Netflix, which provided the lions share of the CW’s SVOD revenue for the past 5 years, estimated to be as much as $1 billion.

The new deal, first reported by Variety, is said to be in the same ballpark for a similar 5-year term in which the window of the series becoming available on the streaming platform is cut from a couple of months to a couple of weeks after a season ends on the CW.

Meanwhile, the CW is retaining in-season rights to all of its series. At the upfront, the network announced that it will make “rolling five” episodes available to more than 80 million devices on mobile, tablet, and all major OTT platforms. There had been talk about a possible play on CBS All Access.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Bummer about the Hulu deal. But I understand why they passed on renewing it. Putting an entire season of content on Hulu would really diminish the value of the season when it goes on Netflix as the article states. By the time the entire season hits Netflix in May they would get screwed over because an entire season would be on Hulu.

I'm guessing this means all CW content will be dropped fairly soon on Hulu.

I used Hulu quite often for CW content when my DVR would become too full or if the DVR would botch a record, which happened on The Flash a few times. For some reason CW shows eat up more DVR space than other shows.

It will suck for those who don't own TVs and only stream because The CW app has forced commercials.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

I may cancel my Hulu subscription when fall TV season starts then. I have cable, but sometimes I delete my CW shows due to DVR space and watch them on Hulu with no commercials. Comcast On Demand has commercials on the CW shows and they are close to a full hour....

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Unfortunately, the remaining options all suck. The CW app isn't available on the Roku or Apple TV. And the CBS All Access service is full of commercials and charges $6/month.

I'd be willing to buy them at Vudu if the prices were reasonable. But the CW shows are grossly overpriced at $49.99 each for a season pass.

Man this suuuuucks. I use my Hulu app on XBOX Live to see CW shows. The CW app on XBOX doesn't even work right.

Sigh...

Well, that just sucks. And my parents are going to dump our cable, I thought this would be a perfectly acceptable way to work around it. Damn.

I started watching this because of you and loving it. I've watched/am watching two other "Canadian series distributed by BBC" (Continuum and Orphan Black) and will jump on a series with the same description. (I hate BBC-produced programming, just can't get into it, but the Canadians really know how to make stuff ).

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

https://www.engadget.com/2016/05/02/hulu-tv-service/

This news is a few months old, but it looks like Hulu will launch a new Live TV service early next year.

Hulu is reportedly working on a new live TV platform that's designed to tempt cable subscribers to cut the cord. The Wall Street Journal believes that Hulu has ambitions to square off against both domestic cable providers as well as Sling TV and PlayStation Vue. Rather than trying to broadcast every channel in existence, it's claimed that the company will focus on quality over quantity. Given that Hulu is part-owned by Disney and 20th Century Fox, you can assume that ABC, ESPN and Fox will be lynchpins of the new platform. The same report explains that Hulu will enable customers to record their own shows in the cloud, rather than on a DVR.

Negotiations are still at an early stage and no firm details have been released, although the WSJ pegs the expected price at around $40 a month. It's also suggested that the service will launch at the start of 2017 and will court Hulu's 10 million-plus users who already pay for its product. It does, however, also mean that yet another streaming provider (with its own content) wants to get into the scrap for your subscription dollars. Between this, Netflix, Amazon, HBO Now, Seeso, CBS All Access, Starz, FilmStruck and YouTube Red, you might wonder if cord-cutting was such a good idea after all.

Acquiring streaming TV content is getting quite expensive.
