Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Wish they bring back "The Blacklist". The first two seasons were available on Hulu - this season they decided to make it NBC exclusive.
I hate watching it on the NBC site - picture is terrible - commercial breaks are always two minutes or more in length - the closed captions are always off.

Funny how Hulu dropped the rights to The Blacklist (still doing well and renewed) and picked up the rights to The Player, which is from the same studio and producers. Look how that turned out.

Probably because they were able to pick up several series for what it would have cost them to have Blacklist which although doing well its ratings are way down from previous season.

How strict is Hulu with their logins? Are they similar to netflix, in that many people share their logins?

Hulu is the strictest streaming service. They only allow one stream at a time.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Are you f'n kidding me?

Could Hulu lose access to current-season TV shows?

Just how much longer should cord-cutters be able to watch episodes from the current seasons of TV shows on Hulu?

That is one question that has emerged in negotiations between media giant Time Warner Inc. and Hulu, which have been heating up lately, according to people familiar with the discussions. The two sides have been in talks since late last year about Time Warner buying into the streaming site as a part-owner.

Hulu, whose current owners include Walt Disney, 21st Century Fox and Comcast, offers a smorgasbord of current-season episodes of broadcast shows such as Fox’s “Empire” and ABC’s “Quantico.”

That allows Hulu subscribers to catch up on many new shows from the first episode onward, even late in the season, a key differentiator from its bigger rivals Netflix and Amazon, which typically only offer viewing after the end of the first season, or later.

Time Warner believes that the presence of full, current seasons on Hulu — or anywhere else outside the bounds of pay-TV — is harmful to its owners because it contributes to people dropping their pay-TV subscriptions, or “cutting the cord.”

In the discussions about taking a 25% equity stake in Hulu, Time Warner has told the site’s owners that it ultimately wants episodes from current seasons off the service, at least in their existing form, although that is not a condition for its investment, according to the people familiar with the discussions.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Okay, I've read the above on several sites now, and I talked about with my wife last night and we use Hulu every night to watch usually a couple of shows a night if not more. I'd say 75% of the content we watch is current season stuff. This would absolutely kill us.

Here is the thing though and maybe some legal guru knows the ins and outs...so Time Warner is seeking a 25% stake and one of the conditions would perhaps be to kill current season streaming. Okay...

Here are my questions...

1. Why would Hulu agree to this? It would kill their subscriber base. Do they need money this badly? I thought they were doing pretty well.

2. Basically if Time Warner did take a 25% stake and Hulu did a nose dive after this (which it would within 6 months time)...they would be willing to take a bath on the investment? You don't purchase a stake in a company to watch it tank. Unless Time Warner are just trying to be assholes.

3. Apparently the channels that do stream through Hulu are on board with the current season streaming concept, why does Time Warner get to say screw you to the consumer who doesn't want a crappy cable service? I mean wouldn't some other streaming service just start doing it (like a Netflix) and then everybody would switch over including the various channels who would take their business elsewhere?

In other news, "Ma's Old Timey Fax Company" is seeking to invest in Apple but only on the condition that they slow down email service and make that awful electronic screeching sound when the send button is clicked.

TW wouldn't be able to squash next day on its own, but since Comcast is already co-owner, they would be able to team up.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

If this does happen, you can blame me. Of course, I just signed up for Hulu a month ago.
On the other hand, if there's any other service you'd like to see run out of business, let me know and I'll subscribe to them immediately for you.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

I was just coming here to post how Hulu had just because as awesome as Netflix as I have my plate full with the current seasons of The X-Files, Grey's Anatomy, and The Biggest Loser

If they have content I want I'd keep it but I've always described Hulu as current seasons and Netflix as past seasons.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Since I have Charter On-Demand,Hulu too me at least, isn't as important with the current shows than the past shows.

I wouldn't mind them showing more movies and older tv shows but the current product is what most people want.

No kidding. For years I was against Hulu on principle - don't have ads if you're charging a premium, dammit! Actually, I still have that stance, but I've softened a bit since getting a 3 month Hulu trial with the Roku 3 I got on Black Friday. I've come to really like it. I was already a fan of The Mindy Project, so I'm glad that they brought it back. And I devoured another original of theirs, Difficult People. I'm really looking forward to season 2 later this year.

I cut the cord long ago and I'll admit that I procure some shows from, ahem, "sources". But my doing that has nosedived with the convenience of Hulu. I'm planning on keeping my subscription after the trial runs out next month. Current season shows, Happy Endings, Seinfeld, MST3K, Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic, Elvira. There's more value there than I thought, especially if using a discounted code from ebay. But man, if this TW plan goes through...

(My only gripe aside from the commercials is that going in, for some reason, I assumed they had all of the seasons of the shows on their service. I started Modern Family with season 3 and was excited to finally catch up on the the first couple of seasons. No such luck.)

Yeah, I'm an avid classic TV lover and have been enjoying season two of Naked City, but was disappointed to find out seasons three and four aren't offered. Luckily, my local library has them for rental.

Still compared with Netflix(which I still subscribe to), Hulu's been a wonderful surprise for me, even with the commercial $7.99 option.

Also, having access to many Criterion titles just caps my preference for them.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Looks like after my recent expunging by Hulu for buying allegedly improperly acquired codes from eBay, the crackdown seems complete. I haven't seen any discounted Hulu codes on the site in weeks. I imagine that they've come to an agreement with ebay to stop selling them.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

If true, that's disappointing. I was hoping to renew at the discounted rate when my subscription runs out in a couple of months. As it is, I've enjoyed it but haven't used it a whole lot. I might have to change my viewing habits and really dig into some of Hulu's content before my renewal time.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

Wow, Hulu must have started to crack down on that. They cleaned house.

Oh well, I use Hulu regularly and I'm fine paying the $11.99 per month (commercial free option) when my current subscription expires in October. Plus, I work in TV and having Hulu is a tax write off anyways.

Huh. I got it until December of this year. I'm enjoying no commercials more than I thought. Put me in for $12 a month after my cards expire.

Re: Hulu Plus -- News and Notable New additions

I don't mind pay $12/month either. The discounted subscription was nice. But I love the commercial free Hulu too much. $12 is worth it.

I wonder if Hulu has shut down the sellers, or if they're simply getting eBay to block the auctions. If it's just eBay deleting listings, then those sellers will probably pop up on other venues.
