I'm betting this might happen to DC Universe in another few years (if it doesn't fold into the upcoming Warners app). It's a case of not having enough original content to support a subscription-based service. They'll make more out of advertising. And they had over 50 exclusive shows...DC has, as of this writing, two (with only a handful more rolling out in 2019).

re: YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

I pay for YouTube Premium, but I’ve never watched one of their originals. The only one I’d consider watching is Cobra Kai which I sort of just forgot about. None of the rest of their original content interests me at all. I just pay for Premium as I watch regular YouTube enough where I don’t like sitting through the ads.

I typically watch through the app on my iPhone or Xbox One or Galaxy tablet. I don’t really use the browser version.

When will this rollout, and will previous Youtube Red content be available for free? I haven't watched all of Cobra Kai yet.

Since 2015, YouTube’s original content was only available to consumers willing to subscribe to the company’s streaming service, YouTube Premium. However, the company plans to combine its current Premium Originals and existing ad supported initiatives into a single programming effort that — by 2020 — will provide free, ad-supported “windows” for YouTube users.
They have free trials all the time. And Cobra Kai is completely worth paying for the service for a month. Just wait until Season 2 starts and either 1. try for a free trial 2. pay the monthly fee and watch both seasons.

YMMV, but I just went to YouTube Premium to sign up again in time for Cobra Kai and got a 1 month free trial.

Last year when I had it, I paid for the 1 month.

I wasn't offered another free month. But no biggie. I'll pay for a month and cancel.

Has the Youtube Premium free version been cancelled? It never came to fruition.

YouTube is cutting back on scripted shows.

They just cancelled Step Up: High Water and a few others since March.

and I got an e-mail today detailing how the ad supported version for their originals will be working:
Hi xxx,We’re reaching out with an update on how we'll release YouTube Originals going forward, as well as updates to your YouTube and YouTube Music features. Your other Premium benefits are staying the same.YouTube Originals changing to early accessAs a Premium member, you can continue to watch YouTube Originals movies, complete seasons, and live streams right when they premiere, ad-free.New YouTube Originals series, movies, and live events released after September 24, 2019 will be made available to non-members to watch for free, with ads. For series, members will get immediate access to every episode of a new season, while non-members will have to wait for each new episode to be released. In most cases, where available, Director’s cuts and bonus footage for YouTube Originals movies and live events will be exclusive to members like you, as well. To learn more about these changes, click here.Updates to downloads on YouTubeIn addition to getting early access to YouTube Originals, your membership still includes ad-free videos, background play, and the ability to download YouTube videos (including YouTube Originals) on your phone to watch offline. We've also added "Recommended downloads" to the Library tab in the YouTube app so you can browse and download videos recommended just for you.Changes to YouTube Music featuresYour membership also continues to include uninterrupted access to YouTube Music (Android/iOS), where you can listen ad-free, offline, and with the screen off. We recently made the following feature changes:•Switch between audio and video: With the tap of a button, switch between a song and the music video with no pauses or interruptions.•Smart downloads: Automatically downloads up to 500 songs from your Liked Songs and other favorite playlists and albums. This is currently available for Android devices. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to YouTube Supportanytime.Sincerely,The YouTube team
Basically if you're still paying for YouTube, you will get your content ad free.

Yeah, there seems to be no real reason to keep paying for Premium, and they'll probably even phase that out sooner or later. For those worried that the cutback on scripted shows will affect Cobra Kai - don't worry. It's not going anywhere as long as those involved want to keep doing it.

I subscribe to Premium because I don't want to watch ads on regular Youtube videos. I don't care about their Original Shows. The only one I've watched is Cobra Kai.

I use ad blockers on every site I visit, including YouTube. So I never see any advertisement.

Re: YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

FYI
If you have T-Mobile, tomorrow they are giving out 2 months of YouTube Premium for free.

Regular price is $11.99/month

I've actually stuck paying the $11.99/month plan since I re-signed up last year. I've gotten so used now to watching content with no commercial breaks.

I pay $9.99 a month for Google Play Music and it includes Youtube Premium. Maybe I'm grandfathered into an old plan?

Nope, not offered on the T-Mobile Tuesday’s app. D, did you get an email about it?

Re: YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

So I went ahead and used it.

I had to cancel 1st and then re-activate with the promo.

Only problem was that I was in the middle of a billing cycle and was already paid for the month. So YouTube only gave me 1 month for free. I guess it's better than nothing.

Re: YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

I got signed up through the T-mobile Tuesday App and followed the instructions. I just have to cancel it by May 24th so it doesn't automatically bill for a third month. Now I can watch both seasons of Cobra Kai.
