Re: The Roku Thread
Roku just essentially bricked my Ultra player because it's trying to force me to accept some new Dispute Resolution Terms. Something about agreeing not to participate in a class action lawsuit against them.

Re: The Roku Thread
97% don’t read that.
So they probably figured they could slip it in there. |
Re: The Roku Thread
I found the instructions to opt out here, in paragraph L. You have 30 days upon receipt of the notice on your device to mail Roku a letter (it's invalid via e-mail) opting out.

Re: The Roku Thread
File a class action lawsuit for that!
It’s been probably a year since I last used my Roku. Only things it’s best at now are Vudu and Movies Anywhere. |
Re: The Roku Thread
If the Stop the FOMO guy's suspicion is correct, this was all about Roku trying to cover their butts after a user data breach.
Here's an article about the breach, that was posted over at AVS Forum. |
Re: The Roku Thread
Oh, wow. That sucks.

Re: The Roku Thread
Holy crap if they actually do this, all my rokus go in the trash. Keep in mind this is only a patent request but jeez.
https://www.lowpass.cc/p/roku-hdmi-ad-insertion-patent Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing. This way, when an owner of a Roku TV takes a short break from playing a game on their Xbox, or streaming something on an Apple TV device connected to the TV set, Roku would use that break to show ads. Roku engineers have even explored ways to figure out what the consumer is doing with their TV-connected device in order to display relevant advertising. |
Re: The Roku Thread
^^ I get that would be annoying and I wouldn't want it either, but note that could only work for "Roku TVs", not the Roku box devices.
I wouldn't be surprised if someday they start showing ads instead of the screensaver on the devices, though. |
Re: The Roku Thread
And I thought it wasn't possible to hate Roku more.

Re: The Roku Thread
Roku got hacked. Over 570K accounts compromised. Probably should change your passwords.
|
Re: The Roku Thread
If bad actors used stolen passwords from another account then Roku wasn't hacked, unless I just don't understand the definition of being hacked.
Then the first response to this tweet is someone who claims they got this email but used a unique password... |

Then the first response to this tweet is someone who claims they got this email but used a unique password... On the other hand, they changed their dispute resolution terms on March 17, 10 days after they were alerted to the strange activity, and a month before they publicly notify their customers. It seems like they at least for a while thought they had royally fucked up and were wanting to cover their asses by having almost all users agree to the new terms before telling anyone. See this post RocShemp made a month ago:

Re: The Roku Thread
Companies know their customer data is extremely valuable but they don't want to pay the expense for serious IT maintenance and security. I've grown increasingly numb given how many prominent national companies have been hacked.

Re: The Roku Thread
Roku could soon patent tech that can sense when content is paused—and run ads https://www.marketingbrew.com/storie...ed-and-run-ads

Re: The Roku Thread
A bunch of streaming services are having 30 days free btwn now and Sept 10 if you get them on the roku app

Re: The Roku Thread
Seems like Roku TVs automatically turned on "motion smoothing" with no option to turn it off:
https://community.roku.com/t5/Discus...re/td-p/974654 They say "oh it's not motion smoothing, it's a reduction in judder" then leave it at that, no explanation otherwise, but people are still reporting no option to turn it off. https://www.tomsguide.com/tvs/roku-t...-how-to-fix-it I don't think I'll ever buy a roku TV again, even at dirt cheap. Ah well. |
Re: The Roku Thread
Yeah... when TV shopping 'what OS does it run on' has become a major consideration. I will never buy a TV running Roku's OS (nor own a Roku device).
|
Re: The Roku Thread
Yeah, I've seen enough issues with them over the years to avoid them. I have one of their devices but will probably switch off after it stops working (which admitting may be a while).
|
Re: The Roku Thread
Have had no reason to use my Roku ever since they dumped private channels.

Re: The Roku Thread
"HOLY GOD. FUCK." PRAISE BE FOR OldBoy
Nearly 30 years since its series finale, and a quarter century since it last saw the light of day, HBO’s Dream On is at last available to stream. All six seasons of the beloved sitcom have quietly surfaced on the ad-supported Roku Channel, which is accessible via the Roku app and TheRokuChannel.com — free of charge. |
Re: The Roku Thread
This is huge.
I wonder if any of it is deleted the way The Drew Carey show got chopped up |
