Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread

Pardon my ignorance but has Netflix and Amazon decided not to do anymore streaming newer releases? For awhile there it seemed they would throw us a bone and stream a movie every couple weeks that came out the same time as redbox (which was still several weeks after on-demand, video store release date) but now I don't see much. Sausage Party on the 23rd is close I guess.

Death Race 2050 (straight to video) just came out on Netflix last week on the same day it was released on BD.

But them posting actual new studio movies is more miss than hit. They tend to focus more on TV, Netflix originals and older movies.

Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread

The more original shows on Netflix, the chances of seeing newer movies/same as Redbox will dwindle is my best guess. I'd rather they get some better movies and get rid of the cheaper crap I have to dig through just to find something decent. And what's with the Roku app playing music or a trailer when I hover over a title? Good god that's really annoying, and there's no option to turn it off except for muting. Guess I'll be casting titles unless that goes away.

Netflix/Hulu/Amazon will never be the same time as Red Box (or Vudu, Amazon Instant, iTunes) for major movies, they have to settle for a cable window (ie: HBO timeframe, about 8 months), not a new releases window (ie: release to DVD timeframe, about 3 months) since the movies still make a ton of profit off DVDs/Blurays.

Their fastest releases tend to be Disney (ie: they had Captain America: Civil War, the Jungle Book, Zootopia, and Alice Through the Looking Glass were all about 7 months after their theatrical releases) since they're more or less the exclusive "Cable" provider for Disney movies (it used to be Starz). They stopped focusing on movies so much because they generally cost $20 - $30m for rights and are all of 90 minutes of content versus $50m for a 12 episode series, and I'm on board with that for the most part. That said they do seem to be culling their movies down a bit, less B movie in favor of fewer movies of higher grade -- albeit most are lesser known.

There's no option to shut off the trailers yet as it's a newer feature, they don't bother me but I agree the music is pretty awful. I usually just hop on InstantWatcher.com and add stuff to my queue.

All this said, I do wish they would commit to a Tuesday, or Saturday, night "new movie" release like HBO does. Add a new decently well known movie a week, something to look forward to.

The only "big" titles coming in February appear to be Finding Dory and Sausage Party. Though I am looking forward to the Andy Whitfield documentary.

And that's understandable, and I'm not expecting same date as Redbox for Netflix streaming, considering how cheap Netflix still is, for now at least. Though I have noticed a lot of stuff coming to streaming subscription services months before they would typically come to cable. There is a lot of older stuff I'd rather see pop up than new, but I guess I'll settle for Tribeca Shortlist in the meantime.

Finding Dory is on Netflix starting today

I think Woman in Gold (Mirren, Reynolds) is new as well. Knowing, Babe, Day Watch, Contact and Mulholland Drive returned.

Santa Clarita Diet Is now streaming. I watched the first episode and really liked it. Try to avoid reading previews as some spoiled the "twist". Wish I hadn't known about it.

It has a good set of stars attached (Drew Barrymore, Andy Richter, Timothy Olyphant, and Nathan Fillian.)

Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread

The entire 1st season of Frequency, which just aired on The CW, is now available on Netflix.

I know most here have so much stuff to watch, but I though it was a good watch for it's 13 episodes. It's loosely based on the movie that starred Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. I think it's a fairly easy show to binge watch and it's quite heavily serialized.

No spoilers, but the season wraps mostly with closure. They do leaves a small element open for another season.

Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread

And Netflix is spending a lot more money on original content than movies.
As of 2016
" 6,494 movies and 1,609 TV shows in its U.S. catalog in January 2014. As of this week [Mar 2016], it has 4,335 movies and 1,197 shows. That’s a 33% dip in films and a 26% drop in television shows in a bit more than two years. "
I think I read they're targeting 50% of their catalog to be original content in the next few years. So watch the Hollywood movies while you can.
I definitely think "New Release xxxday" would be a cool way to have perception try to counter that reality.

Two eps in to OA - hearing mixed reviews. I'll give it a one or two more (and I think it's not that many eps anyway.)
Looking forward to catching up on Crazy Ex Girlfriend.

Michael Bolton's Big, Sexy, Valentine's Day Special was added today. This is basically a Lonely Island special. From Akiva Schaffer (Lonely Island) and Scott Aukerman (writer of W/ Bob and Dave, director of Between Two Ferns)

In typical Netflix fashion, there is no other information available than it co-stars Bolton, Andy Samberg, Michael Sheen, and Sarah Silverman.

That looks great -- I love me some Bob Odenkirk. Worth my Netflix subscription fee for the month of February.

They've dumped an awful lot of TV I was in the middle of, sadly . First world problems .

Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread

This should be a fun show. I loved the original GLOW back in the 80's.

Netflix Launching Wrestling Comedy ‘GLOW’ On June 23

Netflix is launching its straight-to-series wrestling comedy GLOW on June 23, according to a very 1980s video announcement launched by the company today.

Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the ’80s, GLOW tells the story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia, played by Marc Maron, a washed-up, B-movie director who must now lead this group of women and a journey to wrestling stardom.

Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread

I wasn't aware of this. Netflix has a form for requesting Movies & TV Shows.

It probably doesn't have much influence on what they actually get. But if you really want something, it's worth a shot.

Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread

I suggested Baywatch (been wanting to revisit the series for a long long time)

However, I think the music clearance rights might prohibit it from streaming.

I also suggested Van Helsing the series from SyFy. I didn't get a chance to see it when it aired and since Netflix has the rights to Dark Matter, I suggested it.
