Re: NetFlix "Watch Now / Watch Instantly" - Recommendations Thread

Just watched the documentary called "After Porn Ends" which is on Netflix.

Really good and insightful film on what has happened to some well known Porn stars after their career ends. Some of it is quite sad to see what has transpired to some of these people. The film was shot in 2010 and apparently one of the actors interviewed in the film passed away shortly after it was filmed. I won't spoil who it is. If you're somewhat familiar with Porn actors, there are quite a few recognizable people like Randy West, Mary Carey and Asia Carrera.

That was a good one. Have you watched "Inside Deepthroat"? a really good doc on the legal battle of Porn from the 70's.

I'm using a re-routing service that lets me switch Netflix regions on the fly. The problem is, if I'm searching for a specific title, I have to switch a region, search, switch again, search, etc. until I'm through the entire list (10 countries, for now), or until I find the title. As an example, searching for Quantum of Solace, I found that it's only available on Netflix Brazil, is available in HD, and may or may not be in 5.1 audio.

It would be awesome if there was a site that would consolidate all of the different Netflix catalogs and spit out the relevant information quickly so I didn't have to search over and over.
I was searching for the same and this popped up.

you're welcome, I was having the exact same problem using a service that reroutes the IP, I got tired of having to change the country Netflix settings constantly, that site still has a ways to go in the search category but is definitely a good start.

Miller's Crossing ( link )

Coen Brothers 1990 film that is still one of their best. And it's loosely based on the 1942 film "The Glass Key" (that I wish was also available on NetFlix) which was an adaptation of a novel by Dashiell Hammett.

Excellent time travel film that's hard to find on disc, as the DVD's out of print and no Blu-ray yet.

I saw this the other night on HDNet Movies and it looked great. I've seen the movie a bunch of times, but I don't think I noticed until now that Tom (Byrne) was maybe kinda in love with Leo (Finney). I know there are guy-on-guy relationships in the movie, but I just always thought Tom was straight because he was hooking up with Verna, and he defended Leo because he thought it was the right thing to do. This time I picked up on the line Verna says, 'I thought you didn't care about Leo", to which Tom replies, 'I said we were through, it's not the same thing.'

Then at the very end, after Leo says he and Verna are getting married, Tom says he won't work for Leo anymore and Leo walks away. The camera lingers on Tom just long enough to express a sense on longing and sadness at the end of this relationship. Am I reading too much into it? Regardless, it's one of my favorite gangster movies, Coen Bros. movies, and movies in general.

I think you're maybe reading too much into it.
Spoiler:
Tom and Leo were friends, and Tom was always looking out for Leo. So even when Leo threw Tom out, Tom was still loyal to Leo. And there were also hints that Tom may have had feelings for Verna (it was certainly true vice-versa), so sticking with Leo after Leo marries Verna would've been awkward, since it'd be a constant reminder that she picked Leo over him. But Tom was also still hurt from being thrown out, and felt he couldn't trust Leo in the future to make the right decisions.

The biggest problem I can see with the Tom loving Leo romantically is that Tom slept with Verna. OK, he might've slept with some women to pass as straight, but sleeping with your boss's mistress is such a self destructive move that I can't think he'd do it unless there was genuine attraction there.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

Love this movie. Just noticed it's now available for streaming at Netflix. And it's HD.

The US DVD has been out of print for a long time. Looking forward to watching it again.

Indie Game: The Movie

This is truly one of the most interesting documentaries that I've come across in some time. It follows a few small time game developers that are working on titles for release on XBOX Live Arcade. The doc shows the ups and downs of the game development, and how the whole process takes a toll on various aspects of the developers' lives. It's surprising in many ways, and I couldn't take my eyes off of it.

There are some concerns that Netflix is taking on alot of debt to help pay for programming.

I can't see this keeping the $8/month streaming price too much longer. It sounds like they aren't making any money.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off ( link ) is streamable now.

John Hughes film that's one of his best. (Same for Matthew Broderick.)

I'm not so big on India cinema but I just watch Kahanni on Netflix tonight and thought it's was a prettty good thriller with a surprising twist at the end.

Vidya Balan is pretty to watch.

What are you viewing Netflix on? The instant queue is still there on the website.
