If they did, they could find out why people are so pissed at them all the time.

But they really don't care do they? And then people wonder why so many are going under.

So far, the only on-line store that I see responding to the forum is DeepDiscountDVD. Shortly after they went online, I posted a complaint here, and much to my surprise, received an email from them responding to my posting. And just this past week, they responded to a pricing problem on one of their items. I'm sure that others also look, but perhaps just don't care enough to address issues raised.

DeepDiscountDVD is the exception, and withouth this forum, they probably wouldn't have 1/3 of the customers they have. Of course stores don't, did you think they actually cared about us? ;)

Feneant 03-18-01 08:53 AM

Considering the amount of views threads in the forums get, it would be a major advantage to read these forums... when you get 10 threads about the same store saying it sucks, it can't be good for business, and then they wonder why sales are going down.

I know 800.com has someone that looks at this forum. I made a statement about their shipping and they actually posted an answer to it in the same thread.

I was just going to post that, too. But, that person (Steve A) left 800.com within the past couple months to work at Intel, I believe. Geoff posted a thread in Other about it. if you search, it may still be there.

Steve was a nice guy, and he helped me on a couple occasions. Hi Steve, if you're reading this.

I read the forums as often as possible, and post responses whenever necessary (meaning I don't 'lurk'). I agree that it's a very valuable resource, especially here at MovieSource.com, where we are trying to incorporate as many changes/services/upgrades as we can.

We just haven't figured out how to get your members all the top DVDs two weeks before streetdate, for free and still make money at our end...we're working on it...

Is it me or do I sence some hostility there?

Nope...just a feeble attempt at humor.

We aren't asking for free DVDs and items 2 weeks early. For example, Buy.com was very consistent with coupons, low prices, and early DVDs. These are gone now...Just don't offer something you can't give.

foxdvd 03-19-01 11:05 AM

I got Gladiator for 1.99 at moviesource..that is as close to cheap as you can get! :)

I know before reel.com closed, that dvdempire would read these threads all the time, and send out emails to you if you had a question...after dvdempire got bigger, they went down hill in that area..

I know about SteveA leaving, but they have someone by the name of JPerks monitoring this forum now. You can find a post by him in this thread.

How about writing something up for the forums from an etailer's perspective? The cost of shipping, dealing with distributors, etc. I think it would be a good way to show the "other side of the fence" on the online shopping experience.

Filling Steve's shoes (or attempting to)

Well this seems like as good a place as anytime to make my intro. I've been with 800.com for sometime now and was often the person SteveA went to when he needed answers to CS issues. In his absence I have taken over looking over the threads here at DVD talk. I'm also the person you talk to if you call or write 800.com with questions about Movie and Music titles.

Don't be shy to post any questions or concerns about 800.com(I know you won't be) and I'll do my best to provide a prompt accurate answer.

I am glad to see at least some stores are concerned about their business and customers. Thanks for setting me straight on your shipping policies. I decided to preorder some DVDs next month since you can ship an order when complete to save on costs.

schbee 03-19-01 05:47 PM

Im glad to see the retailers reading these threads. What I would like to see somebody do is sell us DVDS at 40% off retail and take previewed DVDS in for trade. Many of us sell to Half.com and give them 15%. Their has to be a way for somebody to offer a trade in and your company could resell previewed DVDS.

I can not speak on the taking of DVD's for trade at this time but I will certainly look into the reason 800.com does not do this. As for offering DVD's at 40% off suggested retail, this just isn't viable in today's DVD market. On almost any DVD title 40% off the suggested retail would put the price of the DVD below the cost. When online DVD stores first began to pop up there we a lot of great deals and even more stores. I am sure you have all noticed a rapid decline in the number of online DVD sellers. The reason for this is simple, you can not maintain a business while selling your goods for less than you paid for them. This holds true for b&m and online stores.

We are committed to offering competitive prices and excellent service on all our products. And although the days of picking up DVD's for a buck maybe gone we plan on offering great deals and bargains for a long time to come.

Hey Josh!

How come I don't get any 800 cent off coupons anymore?

Actually, I used to buy a lot of my DVD's from you and in the past year the only time I have spent any money with you is the Pizza Hut promotion. Even a $10 off $30 (or $40 I suppose if you had too.) would be helpful now and then. I realize you have to make money too, but I would have to believe that giving out a coupon now and then would be beneficial in driving more business to your site.

Gil Jawetz 03-19-01 11:41 PM

Well, here's an email I just received:

Greetings,

We noticed your post on the DVD talk board. We wanted to let you know
that
your order did ship on the 16th of this month by standard parcel post
mail.
This usually takes 5-10 business days to arrive.

Hmmmm, I wonder now if anyone from Netflix ever lurks around on the forum. A couple months back when I was talking about quitting, my rental turnaround time suddenly improved by leaps and bounds.

Aaron Amos 03-20-01 12:49 PM

I too wonder if the online stores I shop at read the forums here!I use Amazon.com.Barnes and Nobles(bn.com)Borders(Borders.com) to get many of my DVD's!!DeepDiscountDVD shopping with them went fine!Pity they do not have movie soundtracks and scores on CD or my "Doctor Who" books!!

If you work for these stores listed above start listening to your customers(Besides DeepDiscountDVD!!Who are awesome! Thanks for my order!!:))

SteveA 03-20-01 12:59 PM

scott27 -- I still do check these forums occasionally, but not as much as I'd like. Although I don't work for 800.com any more, I still think they're a great place, and I think Josh is a great guy to have looking in on these forums.
