There was a news story in Yahoo this morning that the two were in talks about Amazon serving as Walmart's ecommerce site. Has anyone heard any other details/denials?

Check out the story below from the London Sunday Times buiness section today.

The story is unconfirmed but they are normally very accurate.

Ok....let us envision this idea........

Walmart basically becomes an affiliate of Amazon.com......if they can work out in-store pick up as Best Buy has successfully done....that would be great for all!!!! Of course, maybe I am dreaming but it would be nice to have the ability to preorder movies through Amazon with the option to pick the title up upon it's release at your local Walmart!! :)

Walmart Censorship

How long do you think it would take for Walmart to pressure Amazon to only carry censored Cds, books, and to possibly control the movies they carry? If they don't, I'm sure they wouldn't allow you to pick up some of these items at your local Walmart. It would be nice though.

Good point. WalMart likes to consider itself "family friendly" and does not carry anything even remotely questionable. In my opinion, a very legitimate concern.

They will never force amazon to censore their movies online...but they could put limits on what you could pick up in their store..so it does not really hurt anyone..it is still a win-win situation..

Geez...I guess if it ever does happen....I will be unable to pick up movies like Debbie Does Dallas....Deep Throat.... :)

Get my point????? Most movies I would want.....would be readily available through Walmart!!! :)

I would not waste my money on porno.....too much quality out there to be wasting money on this stuff!!! So in answer to your question.....I am not for porno!!! Do we really need Walmart carrying porno to satisfy an alliance between Amazon and Walmart??? :)

Are YOU for porno huzefa??? :)

It was just my OPINION on what could eventually happen. Your OPINION is just as valid as mine though. Unless maybe you are Jeff Bezos?

I am excited to see them merge and hope it benefits both the businesses and the consumers.

Walmart didn't used to censor their music either, but now they do. Maybe DVDs are next, I don't know (you don't know).

I hope I'm keeping this thread on topic.

Amazon doesn't sell hard core porn like the movies you mentioned so I don't think Walmart censorship will be a problem.

That was pretty much my point....what kind of movies does Amazon sell which would be objectionable for Walmart??? If any exist....they are probably not worth having anyway as they are probably adult dvds which for me are a complete waste of money!!! I just make my own adult movies at home....... ;) -ptth-

But does it matter a crap of difference to those of us down here? :)

Wolfchild 03-07-01 11:27 AM

Well, there are a few NC-17 or unrated titles I can imagine not being able to pick up at Walmart....

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
Last Tango In Paris
Robocop CC (not that it's available anyway, just an example)
Henry & June

I'm sure there are many other non-porn titles like this. I don't really see it being a big issue though....that would be like 1% of my purchases and they could be made elsewhere.
Anyway Walmart carries the NC-17 Bad Leiutenant so this is probably nothing to worry about.

While the sarcasm is noted, I still find this tone incredibly offensive even when used in jest.

I don't buy DVDs at Walmart so I don't know the availabilities of the following but how about the unrated versions of Road Trip, American Pie or the upcoming Requiem for a Dream? There's also Embrace of the Vampire but you'd probably just rate that as "porn" and make yet another derisive remark.

RMan360 03-07-01 06:14 PM

My first post in this thread was not just about censoring DVDs. It was about all items carried that had the potential to be censored. Everyone just jumped on the DVD part.

The main reason I thought of it was I had recently purchased a Giger book for my brother at Amazon. When I saw this thread I thought, Walmart would not let books like this in their stores.

There is hope for Walmart in my eyes, by the way. I was just at Walmart the other day and a young teen was trying to buy a rated R DVD. The cashier would not sell it to him because he was under age. This is what I would have liked to see Walmart do with their CDs.

Matt

P.S. Quote me, and flame away :D
