Disney closing 57 Disney retail stores

Disney is closing 57 of their Disney Stores. 2 of them are in my area in Southern California. Wow, so only 25 are going to be left. Looks like if you want Disney you have to buy it online or at the parks. Every time I've walked into a Disney store at the mall, they are usually pretty slow. I'm guessing all these stores closing are money losers. And some of these stores were shut down for months due to COVID. That's just the latest closing. I said it in one of the covid threads but the closest Disney stores to me in SoCal closed in the last 6 months, and aren't even on this list. This includes the original Disney Store in the Glendale Galleria. Seems like they're focusing on their online store instead.

Yup, they closed over 60 U.S. stores in March, then in May all Canadian stores and most European stores.

It was my understanding that Disney didn't own the Disney Stores anyway.

The parks closing as long as they did under Covid, on top of all the lost movie revenue from theaters, really did a number to Disney's cashflow and bottom line.

As it turns out, I was in San Francisco over the weekend and walked by a store with a closing notice.
I used to go there when my kids were young and occasionally found something that was hard to find elsewhere, but the one at our local mall closed years ago. |

Now you've prompted me to visit my local mall. They aren't on the list above but wonder if they already closed. Not having kids and being off "retirement age" I've never visited the store but may just to see what's there.

The one at the local mall that had been open since the 90s closed down in July. It was a good source of cheap (when on sale) Disney clothing for the nephews and they always liked looking at the Marvel stuff while there. Oh well, sign of the times, retailers closing left and right.

Closed in Dallas as well at a very upscale mall. Not in that list. And it was usually pretty crowded.

They're opening up mini-storefronts in Target stores. Which seems to be the new way to retail

It makes sense Disney is closing. Outside of food places which have high margins and actually are reasons people go to the mall,the stores that can met their bottom line are things like Old Navy which does high costume volume, clothing store's that are outright associated with mall's and need to stay there for brand awareness and high end and local places that will have a hard time with online specific commerce. Disney already has 100% brand awareness and basically can get shelf space within other retailers of every economic class be it low end,mid tier and high end retail. 25 years ago you basically had to go to the Disney store if you wanted a shirt,doll or some other accesory of your favorite disney charecter. Now they are in almost every store and online so a trip to the disney store is less special for a kid.
