You can no longer buy 3rd party gift cards with a Best Buy gift card

Best Buy will no longer let you buy 3rd party--ebay, Shell, Burger King, etc gift cards with their gift cards. It hasn't worked online in a while, but they just recently stopped allowing it in the store. The register rejects the transaction. I tried myself in PA & NJ last week and it would not work. It would let me use a reward cert towards a 3rd party GC, though. Some people in parts of NY and CA have been able to get it to work, but I don't know how long that will last.

Here's more info from Doctor of credit's site and the BB customer forum.

And now they will no longer allow us to buy 3rd party gift cards (Netflix, HULU, etc) using Best Buy Reward Points in store. It has been the case on line for a while. I have their CC and bank points to buy Netflix and HULU gift cards. I have not paid either service directly in years. I asked why not after converting a ton of points to certificates. T told me it was due to fraud. I asked how could someone know I had points to convert or have already converted them. Then use my account at a local store in my hometown with my ID to in essence steal my $60 and get a Netflix gift card. I said if that happened it is a way bigger identify theft issue than just a small gift card. Stupid policy.

I was wondering when they would close this loophole. Many have exploited it in various ways, some legal and some not so legal.

Best Buy has systematically shut down anything that cuts into their bottom line over the past five years. They run a much tighter ship than 10-15 years ago.

I never considered using my reward credit to purchase an item sold in the store as a loophole. I hope they do not start restricting what the reward credit can be used on.
