Amazon Prime membership increasing from $99 to $119 on May 11th

Well this kinda sucks. New members get hit on May 12th, existing members on June 16th. They can't even get shit to me in two days, and now they want more money? They better be adding some shit to their service.

In California we also get charged sales tax on the fee.
Guessing they need the extra funds to help pay for Lord of the Rings. They just paid $250M just for the rights.

It’s starting to become less of a good deal for me. I haven’t been ordering quite as often and I really don’t use Prime Video much at all. I like the pre-order discounts on video games lately but a $20 increase is pretty hefty. I think my membership renews in August. I might have to re-evaluate it. The stuff I order I could probably just wait on until I have enough of a total to get free shipping. I dunno we’ll see.

Prime getting all 12 seasons of Unsolved Mysteries was a huge get IMO. I'm currently on the final season. Hulu doesn't even have all the seasons.
I really like Bosch. But, I can't say I regularly watch all their originals. They do get some good exclusives after they air on TV if you need to catch up on stuff.
But, Lord of the Rings is probably at least 2 years away from being ready.
But, I get it. Not everyone here regularly uses their Prime video service or the Music and the most important feature for them is the shipping.
and a $20 price increase for someone who is only a casual user of the service is hefty.

Too bad the seasons of Unsolved Mysteries aren’t for sale. I’d consider buying them even digitally just to have them if the price was right. I’ll probably just cave and keep it but if it goes much past this price I don’t know about going forward. I think it’s a bit off putting to up it by such a considerable amount. I mean $20 over the course of a year doesn’t seem huge but it is quite a jump.

I use the shipping much less than when I was heavily buying movies, but I still use it, and I watch the videos a fair amount. Not the music since I got Spotify, though. 20 extra bucks for a year isn't going to break me.

I forget, is it cancellable? Maybe buy some time by cancelling and buying a new year before the increase?

I'm still bogarting a friend's membership for free using the old family sharing method.

I'm with the OP - I can't remember the last time my "two-day shipping" happened in two days. It's almost always three, and sometimes four days.
I basically use Prime for Amazon Video, which isn't really any cheaper by itself. I really want to see the new Jack Ryan series, so I guess I'll stick with Prime for at least one more year.

It's $1.66 more per month. Seriously, I'm sure you guys drop a $20 for less than what you get with PRIME in general on any given day.

My account still reads: "Next payment: On August 6th, 2018, you will be charged $99 for a year of Prime."
Not sure if we're "grandfathered" in for another year, or if this page will change soon, but right now it appears my rate is not changing.

It’s kinda more the principal to me. If they keep jacking up the price by $20 every couple years or so soon it’s going to $200 a year then it’s definitely not worth it.

I can't complain. I abuse the free shipping; ordering single items as I think of them because I know all orders of any size will ship 2 day for free.

zyzzle will have a field day with this!
It's still worth it for me, but it's certainly becoming less so. I'm buying more games digitally and cut back on movies, so while I still buy a decent amount of random stuff from Amazon i'm getting close to the point where the shipping value isn't as great for me.
I must be lucky though, never had issues with Amazon Prime 2 day shipping in my area. It's consistent and rarely delayed/late.

I don't buy as much as I used to but it is real nice to be able to order one item, if I want, and have it two days later without paying extra for shipping. I definitely make enough orders in a year to make having it worthwhile, especially since I only pay 1/3 of the price.

Re: Amazon Prime membership increasing from $99 to $119 on May 11th
I wouldn't be surprised if my slow-shipping digital credits amounted to half the cost of Prime for me.
I checked the hike schedule out of curiosity:
https://www.cnet.com/news/amazon-to-...o-119-from-99/
Also from that article:

https://www.cnet.com/news/amazon-to-...o-119-from-99/
It's only the second time Amazon has increased the cost of its annual Prime membership since it was first introduced in 2005. In 2014, the company raised the price to $99 from $79.
The new price will apply to existing Prime members' renewals starting June 16. If your regular renewal is on or after June 16, you won't be allowed to prepay for another year at the currently lower rate, an Amazon spokeswoman said.
...
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos just last week revealed that Prime hit over 100 million paid members worldwide, owed in part to the company's continued push to add new benefits, including the Prime Video streaming service, more same-day shipping, the Prime Now rapid delivery program and the Prime Day annual sale.

Oh good, I get to pay more for broken CD and BD cases that are delivered two or three days later than the promised delivery date.

If I'm paying all of that money, I'll feel obligated to use Amazon more than I do now.
They do a really shitty job of packaging things for shipping, and my stuff tends to arrive damaged. And if I receive something that is damaged, I demand a replacement. I'd probably hit their secret return threshold and get banned from ordering and lose the money I paid for Prime.
And when I say damage, I mean $50+ hardcover books and $100+ blu-ray sets that arrive with smashed corners and splits because they arrive loose in over-sized boxes.

It’s worth $120, it’s worth more than that even for casual shoppers.
You’re all renewing and you know it.

Ask for credits or service extensions every time your shipment is late. I got my Prime membership extended for an extra year (essentially halving my membership cost) based mostly on shipments that were only 1 or 2 days late. I also received about $20 total in courtesy credits.

We were at the point of dropping it before the price hike because we very seldom use it anymore. The price increase might just be the nudge we need to cancel it.

To me, what is more of a kick-in-the-pants than the price increase is that it seems that this increase is already out in the media, etc, yet I, a longtime Prime subscriber, has still yet to be informed of this from Amazon directly. You'd think if they knew about this already they would have sent an email out.

Exactly. I make it a point to e-mail customer service every time I get damaged CD or BD cases or my shipment is late, which has been happening more often than not these days.
