Collecting sales tax in WA?

I just noticed that both Deep Discount (no physical location in Wa state) & all Amazon 3rd party sellers are now charging me sales tax. Any idea what's up?

Ebay is not doing this.

Thanks to my fellow bovine!

This also makes sense re ebay not following suit:

Ebay has an active lobbying program in place to fight this sort of law. They will likely hold out until they feel it's too dangerous to them to do so.

At least it will (for once) help very small business'; though Wa's $10k limit is ridiculous.

This must be new. Until now I've only been paying sales tax thru Amazon proper, not 3rd party sellers or Deep Discount.

As a little guy selling on ETSY, I feel bad I have to collect sales tax. It's a big pain in the ass especially having to file every year. I'd rather keep it all on the down low. When I do shows I do waive sales tax if they pay cash. But a lot of shows even require you have a tax number before they allow you to do be a vendor. They don't want any liability if you fail to pay your taxes.

But at this point internet is about to put retailers out of business so the gov't isn't going to give up that revenue for long.

In Wa, retailers have to collect & report sales tax by zip (each zip has a different tax rate). It's an incredibly obnoxious method, that costs the state way more in state employee man hours than it's worth. Until a few years ago, I just had to collect the same amount from all in state customers.

I started doing it myself last year, as my business is so slow I can't justify paying an accountant $50 for the $10-$15 I owe the state. Even with a state employee walking me through the entire process, reporting 10 or so sales for 2016 took around an hour.

Look up "Avalara Trust File". I'm so glad I did. It's really easy. $20 per month.

If you're using PayPal for 100% of your revenue, you can also just export a spreadsheet and search by state. Though some states like to see county and city breakdowns, which becomes tedious (though Avalara will do it all for you).

For fuck sake. If Amazon starts that shit with my state, I might be ordering more on ebay. Bad enough NewEgg started collecting tax here after all these years.

The state governments just don't like losing that revenue and with more and more shopping being done online, it's inevitable. NY is trying to implement collecting sales tax from anyone in the country who buys from NY. Welcome to NY.
