Amazon "add on items" why bother?

Why does Amazon have add on items that say they'll ship with and order $25 or more? It says they are too expensive to ship seperately. I just ordered one such item and 2 regular items that are exactly the same. For some reason they ship the 2 items seperately even though they are the same and could easily fit in the same box. Then they also ship the add on item by itself as well. I get that the add on item could have been in a different warehouse, but them wha't the point in having the requirement in the first place?

Obvious reason is obvious.

Re: Amazon "add on items" why bother?

Every add on item I have ordered from Amazon has shipped in it's own package, usually from a different warehouse than the rest of the stuff in my order. I ordered a $2 item the other day, that I thought for sure would be an add on item, which shipped prime two day for free. It was an empty 4 oz bottle. The 2 oz and 8 oz versions were both addon items, but not the 4 oz. Very weird.

All the add-ons I've bought were in the same box as the rest of my order (all fulfilled by Amazon). I like it; gives you options to buy things which they would not carry otherwise due to the value of the item vs the cost of shipping it.

I presume Amazon doesn't actually carry most of the add-on items themselves but off-sources them to a more traditional parts supplier. I think it's intended as more of a gimmick in the hopes that buyers of those items will use Amazon for their business.

I'm pretty sure all add-ons are stocked/shipped from Amazon. If these were coming from a 3rd party on an order filled with other product shipping from Amazon, that company would lose money since they'd have to ship for free.

It's some sort of arrangement where Amazon pays the shipping costs. Amazon has better shipping arrangements with the major carriers than just about every other company.

Re: Amazon "add on items" why bother?

Got them all today. The add on item came from a different warehouse. The 2 posters I ordered came from the same warehouse. What's odd is that I ordered 2 of the same poster, and they both could have fit in the same box as it was too larger to begin with. But instead they ship it in 2 separate boxes that ate too larger to fit one poster and ship them seconds apart. Why waste the extra money on shipping and packing material?
