Xfinity Streampix - New Subscription Streaming Service from Comcast

Comcast has announced a new subscription streaming service. It's scheduled to launch today. It'll be included in some of their highest priced packages, or as a $4.99 add-on to other Comcast plans.

Xfinity Streampix — New Streaming Service Delivers More TV Everywhere

Our goal is to deliver the best video entertainment source available on any screen. That's why we are launching a new subscription video service this week called Xfinity Streampix that complements the 75,000 hit TV shows and top-quality movies available to our customers today on Xfinity TV.

Starting this Thursday, Xfinity Streampix will enable our customers to instantly view popular entertainment — both in and out of the home — from leading movie studios and programmers including Disney-ABC Television Group, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution and Cookie Jar.

We've always been focused on giving our customers the best and most current entertainment choices available across platforms. We also recognize there's a marketplace for streaming deeper-library movies and TV shows and that's where Streampix comes in. With Xfinity Streampix, we're adding more past season TV shows, more movies and more value to our customers' subscriptions. For customers that are interested in this type of content, Xfinity TV and Streampix combined provide a one-stop solution for all of their video entertainment needs across screens.

Xfinity Streampix also gives us packaging and bundling flexibility for new and existing customers. We will include the service to millions of our customers in many of our bundled packages on day one and as a low-cost service sold separately to other video customers.

At launch, Streampix gives customers access to top programming like complete seasons of TV series, popular children's franchises and hit movies they can instantly stream on their TV, on Xfinity On Demand, online at XfinityTV.com and through the Xfinity TV app. In the coming year, our plan is to significantly increase the number of TV shows and movies available through Streampix, as well as, to bring the service to additional devices like the Xbox 360 and Android-powered devices.

Their press release lists some sample titles. If this is the best they're offering, I'm not that impressed.

According to the NYTimes, they have a 10-year deal with Disney. Hopefully with that, and their connection with NBC/Universal, they'll be able to put together a good catalog.

30 Rock (NBC)
Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
Heroes (NBC)
Lost (ABC)
Married…with Children (Sony)

In the coming year, the Streampix service will be available on additional devices such as Xbox 360 and Android™-powered devices. Streampix will be included as part of many Xfinity triple-play packages, Blast!+ and Blast! Extra video/high-speed Internet packages, as well as separately for $4.99 a month with other video packages, and enables the company to have greater flexibility with packaging and bundling options. With Streampix, the Xfinity TV service is a comprehensive video solution that lets users watch TV episodes of current seasons and complete past seasons of broadcast and cable hits. Xfinity TV also offers a suite of tools to personalize and manage viewing across screens for no additional charge through XfinityTV.com and the Xfinity TV app. Xfinity TV will continue to make more entertainment choices and personalization tools available across screens and through additional devices in the future.

Looks like this won't be offered as a standalone service. It'll only be available to Comcast customers. Sounds like this is more about customer retention and less about directly competing with Netflix.

Not much to get excited about here...I suppose if you had Comcast service and didn't subscribe to anything like Netflix or Hulu, it might be appealing...otherwise, there's nothing here that you can't find elsewhere.
