Blockbuster Gift Cards Expire April 7, 2011

Since it's not directly part of the store closings, I though this deserved its own thread (mods please move if you disagree).

All Blockbuster Gift Cards will expire on April 7, 2011. You have until store closing on April 6 to use them. They can be used at stores that are going out of business as well as stores that are staying open.

I saw the signs posted at two Blockbusters today: one that was closing and one that wasn't.

So if you've got any Blockbuster Gift Cards, you've got a little less than 2 weeks to use them.

/\ If this is a nationwide directive, that doesn't bode well for the immediate future of Blockbuster.

They stopped selling gift cards several months ago so tis isn't a surprise.
The surprise is that the last days of the BBV b&m hasn't been formally announced yet.

Better question, who buys blockbuster gift cards? Talk about a crappy gift.

I found one in a drawer and took it in and it expired two years after issue. That's fucking rude. This was like 2 months ago. I suppose you are supposed to read the fine print on the back.

The company is supposed to go up for sale on Monday, April 4th. This might finally be it. Nice that Blockbuster was given a little more time to turn things around and all they did was threaten their employees more about upselling and calling customers by name, while losing $68 million dollars just this year.

OK, so Dish Network's getting them- what now? If Dish has porn channels, wonder if they'll start carrying porn in the stores? While I would be overjoyed to see Blockbuster go out of business, with the state of media retailing the way it is now I would like to see someone turn Blockbuster into a store I'd patronize- that means NO censorship and focus more on sales than rentals (doesn't Dish have pay-per-view movies for the people who want to rent stuff?)

+1 for no censorship at BB. That'd certainly make me into buying from them.

BB also has stores in Canada where Dish doesn't operate and then there's the OTA crowd.

I figure HBO wouldn't be interested with Time-Warner cable and all but if they stated putting out "Showtime this week" etc discs for to compliment their sat service as an OTA'er that'd catch my eye.

Focus more on sales than rentals? Really? Seems like that part of the business is especially difficult, especially with big stores doing loss leaders because they can upsell other stuff along with the dvd sales. I'm not sure Dish/Blockbuster can compete with that.

Dang, I have one from ages ago and never heard this. It has about $17 left? This doesn't seem legal for them to expire them especially in my state of CA.

I recently found a BB gift card I lost about 6 years ago. Found it under the seat of my car when I was vacuuming. At first I thought it was my lucky day, then I ran across a news article about BB gift cards becoming worthless after April 7. Unfortunately I found the card a month too late. I'm not sure what it is worth but believe it is between $20 to $25. I remember I got a bunch of gift cards years ago when BB was buying used DVDs. I unloaded a bunch of old DVDs I didn't want and converted the store credit I accumulated into gift cards. Fortunately I used all of the other cards a long time ago.

I can almost guarantee that card was expired anyway. Those old BBV cards expired after 2 years of non usage.

Not if you purchased it and live in California. We are exempt from the 2 year limit.

I thought I would bump this thread instead of derailing the BB blu-ray thread again on this subject.

BB now selling gift cards again but old cards are still virtually worthless. I found if you have an old card you can trade it for 5 free rentals. That's about all you can get for one if you still have it.

Dish Network Gives Gift Cards Another Black Eye With New Blockbuster Gift Cards

This morning, I noticed Blockbuster had started selling gift cards, again. At first, I was excited at the possibility of all those worthless Blockbuster Gift Cards gaining their value back. Perhaps DISH Network Corp. had come around and done the right thing by choosing to accept gift cards issued before it's acquisition of Blockbuster earlier this year; it would be great for consumers and was long overdue.

Dish_logoDISH Network: A New Low

Unfortunately, DISH Network Corp. is still acting in a very selfish manner by choosing not to accept the old Blockbuster Gift Cards and they've just made things a lot worse by issuing new gift cards with the same brand less than a year after all the "old" Blockbuster Gift Cards became worthless. Furthermore, there is no mention on the company's website of the old vs new blockbuster gift cards. Blockbuster has chosen to ignore the matter all together in that regard.

Bad For The Gift Card Industry

DISH and Blockbuster's decision to start selling gift cards is terrible for the gift card industry, an industry known for getting bad press.

A company going out of business, and consequently it's gift cards becoming worthless is not even as bad as this situation. That's because:

It's completely avoidable: Blockbuster has actively selected to purse this strategy.
It's very confusing: issuing gift cards with the same brand less than a year after millions of dollars was wiped out of consumer's pockets is horrible.
Nothing will make consumers fell cheated more than being denied of redeeming an old Blockbuster Gift Card while the company sells it's new Blockbuster Gift Cards at the same point of sale counter.
It's scenarios like this which result in more legislation aimed at regulating the gift card industry.

Make No Mistake

Blockbuster_corporateFrom time to time you'll hear people say something like: "A few bad apples give the gift card industry a bad name." Make no mistake about it, DISH and Blockbuster are two of those bad apples. Not once, but now twice. I wish the Blockbuster's Leadership Team would think a bit more before acting so selfishly and giving the gift card industry a second black eye.

That's why I don't read blogs. Awful, awful writing filled with even more awful "facts".

If you need batteries, you can get a staples reward membership and get free batteries once a week. Not some off brand but stuff like Duracell.
