Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

http://money.cnn.com/2010/11/22/tech..._plan/?iid=MPM

Here's the lowdown:

$7.99 a month for streaming only

$9.99 a month for 1 DVD out plus streaming

$14.99 a month for 2 DVD's out plus streaming

$19.99 a month for 3 DVD's out plus streaming (I subscribe to this one)

$27.99 a month for 4 DVD's out plus streaming

Apparently they are cutting down on the number of DVD's they purchase and focusing more money on acquiring streaming content.

Interesting interview with Netflix's CEO

Hey, that's awesome. I'd rather they take away my ability to stream and keep my subscription at the same price.

Oh well. I've been paying $17.99/month for the 4-at-a-time with streaming, so I figure it's about time for an increase.

I won't be surprised if it's an extra $2/month, but will be pissed if they raise my price all the way to $27.99.

i wouldn't mind so much if companies didn't have their exclusive rental deals that Netflix is ahead on none.

when are the prices supposed to go into effect?

Starting with your next billing cycle.

You must be on some major grandfather plan. I would check your account status, because the site already updated and mentions the changes coming up.

Yes, I've been a member since October 2000.

Less than 5 minutes ago, got this e-mail from Netflix:

Dear xxxxxxxxxx,

We want to let you know about two important changes to the Netflix service.

1. The price of your current plan is changing from $17.99 a month to $19.99 a month. This new price will be effective with your next billing statement on or after January 2, 2011, and will be referenced in your Membership Details. With your current plan you can both instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV and receive unlimited DVDs by mail.

2. We now also offer a new $7.99 a month plan which lets you instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV. This plan does not include any DVDs. All the titles you can watch instantly on your current plan are also available on this new plan, and as a reminder, not all titles on DVD are available to watch instantly. This new plan is available immediately – if you'd like to switch to this new plan at any time, simply visit Your Account.

Why the changes? Our selection of TV episodes and movies available to stream has grown dramatically, and as a result most members want us to deliver unlimited movies and TV episodes two ways: streaming instantly over the internet plus DVDs by mail. The price change will allow us to continue to offer the popular plan choice of unlimited TV episodes and movies streaming instantly along with unlimited DVDs. The new plan, which does not include DVDs, is a great option for the increasing number of members who only want to watch instantly. The $7.99 a month price reflects no DVD shipping costs on this plan.

We hope you're enjoying great TV shows and movies from Netflix, and that you'll continue to enjoy Netflix on whichever plan you choose. We realize you have lots of home entertainment options, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have any questions, please call us at 1-800-715-2146.

–The Netflix Team

I've been cycyling thru less DVD's than I used to, I think I'm gonna drop from 3 at a time to 2 at a time.

I don't know if I was under a grandfather plan but my plan went up by over $5:

The price of your current plan, which includes access to Blu-ray discs, is changing from $18.39 a month to $23.99 a month. This new price will be effective with your next billing statement on or after January 2, 2011, and will be referenced in your Membership Details. With your current plan you can both instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV and receive unlimited DVDs by mail.

I did this a couple of months ago. Personally, I think this is what Netflix is trying to get people to do. It's cheaper for them to stream than it is to mail discs.

Same here, at least. This is the push I've needed to cut back.

I might even abandon Netflix altogether now, just because I've been so busy that I rarely get around to watching things these days.

I've cut back to 1 disc about 2 months ago. I've been streaming movies but keeping 1 disc for newer movies.

Still not a bad deal... I am glad they didn't limit the number of streams.... to hours or titles.. I am thankful it is still unlimited.. I only keep the DVD part cause there is still a lot of titles that are not available streaming... ... ... yet..

Re: Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

Not too excited about this since I don't stream. The Internet where I am isn't terribly fast so the quality isn't anywhere near where I want it for watching a movie. There is a reason I have a 54" Plasma and a PS3 and 7.1 surround, and it's not to watch streaming video. I may lower my plan from 5 to 3 or 4 at a time but I will be sticking with discs only for the forseeable future.

Oh, no question, especially with uncertainty around the post office. But as I said in the other thread, I've been meaning to cut back anyway (my grandfather plan is $21.99 for four discs including BD) because I don't need to spend that $ on rentals/streaming right now. There's still much more I want to see on disc than on streaming, but I have started to use that.

Does anyone actually use the streaming? How's the selection and is it HD quality?

DJariya 11-23-10 03:12 PM

Re: Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

^^ I do. The selection is actually pretty good if you like catalogue titles and some older TV shows. They also have alot of current TV shows, but only the seasons on DVD. As far as New Releases goes, it's not there yet.

I was going to ask the same thing about the disc rental part of Netflix. Streaming is awesome! Not great for new releases, but most of them suck anyway.

Re: Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

good ive been wanting this . their overpriced blu ray plans suck since they dont seem to get most of the older releases. I like the streaming though and if your connection is fast the HD is great. I used to have a crappy internet service and the HD was ok, when i got surewest fiber it looks almost as good as a blu ray, sometimes just as good

Re: Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

I was watching Notting Hill in HD and it looked fine but not great. Odd thing was that it opened in 2.35 then switched to 1.85. I didn't think much of it, but then the service got interrupted midway through the movie three times, and each time it started from the beginning. I got annoyed and put in the DVD (I know, that should have been the first option, but we were playing with the service) and that was in 2.35. I haven't gone back to the stream to double-check that, though.

Re: Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

Really? $7.99 for streaming? $5.99 sounds more reasonable. I was happy with the $8.99 DVD and streaming. An extra dollar now just to keep 1 DVD at a time? Netflix has just been changing for the worse every year now. Charging extra for BD, still no better availability, the 28 day delay on new releases, and now this?

Thats what the graNDfathered 4 out plan was without blu added in at another $4.
I have the added $4 for blu and got the notice for the $24.99.

Re: Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

In march '09 the plan actually went down from 17.99 to 16.99. Then 2 moinths later they added the eztra for blu extortion fee so for $5 extra I could get blu in the mail, $21.99.

davidh777 11-23-10 11:48 PM

Re: Netflix raising Prices -- Offers new Streaming Only Plan

Whotony and I are on the same grandfather plan, and I was close to switching when they added the blu surcharge but it wasn't a huge gain. Now I have proper incentive.
